A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

,

New This Month! I'm excited to bring you the latest and most innovative technology to tighten and retexturize your skin - The Greenwich  Secret.

The Greenwich Secret is a microneedling device that includes radiofrequency technology which helps to stimulate collagen and dramatically improve skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin crepiness. Check out our 15 second Instagram video demonstrating this new treatment:

While The Greenwich Secret is great for crepey skin and wrinkles on the face, neck, and decolletage, this technology is also a winner for the body - treating sagging knees, unwanted stretch marks, and loose skin on the stomach. The results, whether on the face or on the body, are incredible.

And although we may look a little different in our protective equipment, we're still the same concierge practice you know us to be. I look forward to seeing you in the office soon!

Best,

Dr. Nichols

A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

,

Thank you for staying connected with us by reading our newsletters, emailing us such sweet messages, and following along with us on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Your love and support to our small business truly means the world and the reason why I think we have the best patients.

To continue to stay connected, we have a host of ways to keep you and your skin healthy and uplifted while at home:

Tune in Thursday, April 23, 2020 at 4PM with me to hear about one of my signature treatments: The Liquid Lip Lift. We’re going live from our NicholsMD and SkinLab Instagram accounts to explain lip fillers, the advanced injectable techniques we use, why we love this 15-minute treatment, showcase our patients' results, and answer any questions you have about lip fillers. (Psst: Now 15% Off!)
Tune in Thursday, May 7, 2020 from 7-8PM to hear Katie French, PA-C talk about trendy ways to practice sun-safety and how to do at-home mole checks. We’ll be raffling off SkinCeuticals sunscreens and giving out promo codes to Mott50, a stylish sun protective apparel company.
Schedule a Zoom follow-up appointment with me as it relates to acne, rosacea, dry skin, hair loss, or any other skin conditions that you or your family may need. I’m also available for emergent appointment, like the need for sutures, to help alleviate the demand of Emergency Room visits.

Even though we’re all home, I encourage you to maintain a healthy lifestyle by drinking plenty of water, adhering to your skincare regimens, getting a full night’s rest, and doing your best to exercise because good skin starts from the inside out!

Together, we will get through this. And my team and I look forward to seeing you when our office reopens in May.

Best,

Dr. Nichols

Tips to Combat Dry, Cracked Hands from Hand-washing

20 seconds is a LONG time – 2 “Happy Birthday” songs for start to finish sure. Now multiple that by the tens of times we are washing our hands these days and couple it with the 70% alcohol hand sanitizer we’re using 5 times per hour in between. All of this hand washing is a must-do, of course, but it certainly is causing major damage to our hands. As a doctor, I already had dry hands because of all the hand washing I do on a daily basis. But now, they look really, really bad. Dry, cracked, fissured in places – not to mention not having a manicure in 6 weeks… – and my hands look 100-years-old.

Here are some tips to prevent your hands from looking like mine do right now.

And remember these tips even once the pandemic has passed. Because once normalcy returns, constant hand washing is going to be an engrained habit for all of us (which is a good thing!).

The Trifecta of Skincare:

The 3 Products You Need in your Anti-Aging Routine

By: Dr. Kim Nichols
Board-Certified Dermatologist and
Founder of NicholsMD & SkinLab by NicholsMD

During this time of social distancing, we are all looking for ways in which we can best take care of our skin from home. And if you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve seen that DIY skin care is bigger than ever. But all this well-meaning advice can be overwhelming.

So, as your board-certified dermatologist, I want to take this time to help you clean out your drawer full of half-used creams (you know the one I’m talking about!), and tell you the THREE (yes, ONLY 3) products/ingredients you MUST have in your anti-aging, stay-gorgeous, daily routine – and it’s what I call The Trifecta.:

  1. A Vitamin C & E-based Antioxidant – UV rays, pollution, and lifestyle factors (e.g. stress, poor diet, dehydration, alcohol) all take a big toll on your skin, creating free radicals that destroy collagen and prematurely age your skin. Antioxidants combat these free radicals, helping to prevent the damage that they can incur. But not antioxidants and ingredients are equal, so don’t be fooled by advertising. Medical-grade skincare, like SkinCeuticals, is what I preach because it’s been studied by researchers to prove its efficacy, formulated for a results-driven outcome, pure in its ingredients, and safe for use. So, my favorite medical-grade antioxidant and #1 selling product at my practice? SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic. This hero product, CE Ferulicis clinically proven to reduce combined oxidative damage from free radicals by 41%. Use it every morning before your sunscreen to your face and neck.
  2. Daily sunscreen – Not surprisingly, sunscreen is essential in any anti-aging regimen. And the key is that you must use it EVERY day. Despite this direction, many people still don’t use sunscreen daily, often because we assume sunscreens are thick, chalky, and don’t apply nicely with our makeup. I’ve also been told my patients that they wear makeup that has sunscreen in it, but that too is not suffice in protecting your skin from signs of aging or skin cancer. The good news is that there are now some great cosmetically-elegant sunscreens that you’ll love – because I do, too. Some of my favorite, medical-grade sunscreen choices are: SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 – for oily or acne-prone skin types; SkinCeuticals Light Moisture UV Defense SPF 50 – for combination/normal skin; and SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 – for dry or aging skin. Sunscreen is applied after all your other skincare products are applied but before make-up.
  3. Retinol – There is a reason that dermatologists consider retinol to be the #1 anti-aging ingredient. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that increases cell turnover in our skin, helping to keep it younger and brighter-looking. It single-handedly improves the appearance of pore size, uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles. (Basically, skin magic!)  The retinol product I recommend is SkinCeuticals Custom D.O.S.E. Custom DOSE is a customized product that we formulate for you in our office, in under 7 minutes, that includes a personalized retinol concentration and other anti-aging and brightening agents like Kojic Acid and Niacinamide.  Apply a small-pea size amount of your Custom DOSE product at bedtime, starting at 2-3 times per week, and followed by your nighttime moisturizer.

By using my Trifecta regimen of an antioxidant, sunscreen and retinol, you have the fundamentals of a scientifically-proven anti-aging skincare for life.

A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

When I founded NicholsMD of Greenwich in 2013, I wanted to bring NYC-luxury to Greenwich, offering patients, like you, the most innovative skincare solutions to look and feel your best every day. Fast forward seven years, and my team and I are still laser-focused (pun intended!) on that mission.

So, I am excited to share that we have officially opened a second location, SkinLab by NicholsMD in Harbor Point, Stamford, CT. At this location, we will have select NicholsMD treatments, and the same commitment to our patients by offering boutique care for beautiful skin.

Check out Skinceuticals' General Manager, Tina Fair, and  Mayor of Stamford, David Martin, and I at the SkinLab ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this week!

But that’s not all that’s new. My family and I also welcomed a new member to our family: a 10-week old Bernadoodle named Blue! Here’s a picture of my family and I with our puppy.

I look forward to seeing you at your next appointment and hearing what’s new with you, too.

Best,

Dr. Nichols

Tips For Relieving Dry Skin

Here are some of Dr. Nichols’ tips on how to relieve dry skin this winter:

Limit your time in the shower to 5 or 10 minutes, and shower with warm rather than hot water.

Slather on the moisturizer immediately after drying your skin. "Aquaphor is one of my favorite moisturizing ointments for the body," says Dr. Nichols.  And, Triple Lipid Restore is NicholsMD's most popular moisturizer for the face.

Carry a non-greasy hand cream with you, and apply it after you wash your hands. We love our SkinCeuticals' Neck, Chest, and Hand Repair to protect and correct our hands.

Wear lip balm. Chapped lips can be painful and bothersome. Protect your lips with a moisturizing ointment, like Aquaphor.

Wear gloves. Our hands are often the first place we notice dry skin. You can reduce dry, raw skin by regularly wearing gloves.

Invest in a good a humidifier to add moisture to your air.

If your dry skin persists or becomes more irritated, request an appointment with Dr. Nichols today!

How To Prevent Common Skin Infections At The Gym

Is working out reguarly part of your 2020 resolution?

While working out has many benefits, including weight control, disease prevention, and even mood improvement, germs can thrive at the gym. This could put gym goers, like you, at risk for a variety of common skin infections. Although skin infections are not a reason to cancel your gym membership, the American Academy of Dermatology shares a few simple steps on how to avoid germs while you’re at the gym.

Wear loose-fitting, moisture-wicking clothes. This will help keep your skin dry and prevent germs from growing. Remember to wash your gym clothes after wearing them.

Always wear shoes, especially around pools, and in locker rooms and showers. Keep a pair of shower shoes, flip-flops, or sandals in your gym bag. Never walk barefoot at a public gym.

Keep any cuts clean and covered. Avoid using saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs until your wound is healed.

Disinfect equipment before and after using it. Clean equipment with disinfectant wipes or spray. For additional protection, consider adding a barrier, such as a towel, between your skin and shared surfaces, like workout benches and bicycle seats. When it’s possible to provide your own equipment, such as a yoga mat, bring it from home rather than using the gym’s.

Wash or sanitize your hands immediately after working out.

Shower as soon as possible. After showering, put on clean clothes, including clean socks and underwear. Never share personal care items, including towels and razors.

Keep an eye on your skin; and if you notice signs of a possible skin infection - like a red rash, a boil, pain or swelling - make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Kim Nichols.

A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

With summertime finally here and July around the corner, I wouldn't be your dermatologist without reminding you about the importance of daily sunscreen and protective sun wear this season.

With my family leaving for a summer vacation in Utah next week, here's a sneak-peek into what I packed for my family to practice safe sun habits, too:

  • SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic (for my face, neck, and chest)
  • Glo's Tinted Moisturizer with SPF (for my face, neck, and chest)
  • EltaMD's Aerosol Sunscreen (for my 3 kids!)
  • SkinCeuticals' Light Moisture UV Sunscreen (for my whole body!)
  • Isdin's Mineral Sunscreen Brush (to reapply sunscreen on-the-go)
  • Wide-Brim Sun Hats
  • Protective Swimwear, like Mott50
  • Oversized Sunglasses

So, whether on vacation or just outside, remember to wear an antioxidant and a sunscreen every day, and reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors.

I'll be posting some pictures of my family's vacation on our Instagram and Facebook account, so if you're not already following us, I hope to connect there, too :)

   _______________

@NicholsMD_Dermatology!

Best,

Dr. Nichols

How to Apply Self Tanner

Self-tanner can help you achieve that glow-y, tan look without the damage from harsh UV-Rays.

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Dermatology that Dr. Nichols recommends to her patients on how to apply self-tanner for long-lasting results:

  • Exfoliate. Use a washcloth to exfoliate the skin prior to applying a self-tanner. Using an exfoliating product also will help remove dead skin cells. Spend a little more time exfoliating where your skin is thickest — elbows, knees and ankles.
  • Dry your skin. Drying your skin before you apply a self-tanner helps it go on evenly.
  • Apply in sections. Apply the self-tanner in sections (such as the arms, then legs, followed by the torso). Massage the self-tanner into your skin in a circular motion.
  • Wash your hands after each section. You will avoid orange-colored palms by washing your hands with soap and water after you finish applying the self-tanner to each section of your body.
  • Dilute over your joints. Dilute the self-tanner on the knees, ankles, and elbows, because these areas tend to absorb more self-tanner than the rest of the skin. To dilute, lightly rub with a damp towel or apply a thin layer of lotion on top of the self-tanner.
  • Give your skin time to dry. Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed. For the next three hours, it is best to wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating.
  • Apply sunscreen every day. You still need to protect your skin with sunscreen. Be sure that your sunscreen is water resistant and a 30 SPF

A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

Spring is officially here! And for me, that means it’s high season to help my patients repair and replenish their skin for spring after enduring a long and harsh season of winter.

Frequent air travel, family ski trips out west, and cold weather have all managed to wreak havoc on my own complexion as well. So, in this month’s blog I’ve including some quick tips on how to refresh your skin after winter and my #1 go-to skincare product to get glowing skin.

Hope to see you in the office soon so you can look and feel your best year-round!

Best,

Dr. Nichols

PROCEDURE OF THE MONTH:  Redness Minimizer Laser!

*$395 – (Savings of $105!)

Our signature Redness Minimizer Laser helps to treat facial redness and broken capillaries.

At NicholsMD, we know that more than 61% of our patients are bothered by facial redness and broken capillaries. And this leads to an appearance of ruddiness and uneven skin tone. For this reason, we’re featuring our Redness Minimizer Laser all month long so you get that even, glowing skin that we all desire.

Our patients that have had the Redness Minimizer Laser describe it as causing “little to no discomfort”. The treatment can be done in 25 minutes or less, and we are so happy with our patient’s results when done in a series of 3. Check it out!

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH: Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight

Ready to glow?

Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight improves the appearance of skin texture and tone to promote bright, glowing skin.

Formulated with a free acid value of 10% glycolic acid, the Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight product helps to exfoliate your skin and supports cell turnover.

This potent night cream is synergistically blended with 2% phytic acid to promote skin clarity and brightness, and a triple action-soothing complex to help support the skin barrier.

“Most glycolic products have less than 7% glycolic concentrations. Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight has a 10% glycolic concentration. This is what makes this medical-grade skincare product so unique and effective,” says Dr. Nichols.

Healthy Skin Starts with the Daily Use of Sunscreen

Patients always ask us – “Do I still have to use sunscreen every day even if it’s not the summer?” And the answer is a resounding, YES!

At NicholsMD, we believe beautiful skin is healthy skin. Taking vitamins high in vitamin D and applying sunscreen every day, helps to prevent signs of premature aging, protect your skin from discoloration and helps to keep your skin glowing.

The reason you need to use sunscreen year-round is that much of the sun damage that causes skin aging comes from UVA rays you are exposed to every day. “So even in the fall, winter, and spring you should apply sunscreen to your face, neck, chest, and the backs of your hands,” says Dr. Nichols, a Medical Council Member of The Skin Cancer Foundation

NicholsMD offers an array of sunscreen options for men, women, and teens that are elegant and gentle enough for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Request an appointment today for one of our skincare specialists to help customize a daily sun safety plan for you which includes a medical-grade sunscreen and vitamins, like Heliocare and vitamin D.
