How To Prevent Common Skin Infections At The Gym

Is working out reguarly part of your 2020 resolution?

While working out has many benefits, including weight control, disease prevention, and even mood improvement, germs can thrive at the gym. This could put gym goers, like you, at risk for a variety of common skin infections. Although skin infections are not a reason to cancel your gym membership, the American Academy of Dermatology shares a few simple steps on how to avoid germs while you’re at the gym.

Wear loose-fitting, moisture-wicking clothes. This will help keep your skin dry and prevent germs from growing. Remember to wash your gym clothes after wearing them.

Always wear shoes, especially around pools, and in locker rooms and showers. Keep a pair of shower shoes, flip-flops, or sandals in your gym bag. Never walk barefoot at a public gym.

Keep any cuts clean and covered. Avoid using saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs until your wound is healed.

Disinfect equipment before and after using it. Clean equipment with disinfectant wipes or spray. For additional protection, consider adding a barrier, such as a towel, between your skin and shared surfaces, like workout benches and bicycle seats. When it’s possible to provide your own equipment, such as a yoga mat, bring it from home rather than using the gym’s.

Wash or sanitize your hands immediately after working out.

Shower as soon as possible. After showering, put on clean clothes, including clean socks and underwear. Never share personal care items, including towels and razors.

Keep an eye on your skin; and if you notice signs of a possible skin infection - like a red rash, a boil, pain or swelling - make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Kim Nichols.

A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

With summertime finally here and July around the corner, I wouldn't be your dermatologist without reminding you about the importance of daily sunscreen and protective sun wear this season.

With my family leaving for a summer vacation in Utah next week, here's a sneak-peek into what I packed for my family to practice safe sun habits, too:

  • SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic (for my face, neck, and chest)
  • Glo's Tinted Moisturizer with SPF (for my face, neck, and chest)
  • EltaMD's Aerosol Sunscreen (for my 3 kids!)
  • SkinCeuticals' Light Moisture UV Sunscreen (for my whole body!)
  • Isdin's Mineral Sunscreen Brush (to reapply sunscreen on-the-go)
  • Wide-Brim Sun Hats
  • Protective Swimwear, like Mott50
  • Oversized Sunglasses

So, whether on vacation or just outside, remember to wear an antioxidant and a sunscreen every day, and reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors.

I'll be posting some pictures of my family's vacation on our Instagram and Facebook account, so if you're not already following us, I hope to connect there, too :)

How to Apply Self Tanner

Self-tanner can help you achieve that glow-y, tan look without the damage from harsh UV-Rays.

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Dermatology that Dr. Nichols recommends to her patients on how to apply self-tanner for long-lasting results:

  • Exfoliate. Use a washcloth to exfoliate the skin prior to applying a self-tanner. Using an exfoliating product also will help remove dead skin cells. Spend a little more time exfoliating where your skin is thickest — elbows, knees and ankles.
  • Dry your skin. Drying your skin before you apply a self-tanner helps it go on evenly.
  • Apply in sections. Apply the self-tanner in sections (such as the arms, then legs, followed by the torso). Massage the self-tanner into your skin in a circular motion.
  • Wash your hands after each section. You will avoid orange-colored palms by washing your hands with soap and water after you finish applying the self-tanner to each section of your body.
  • Dilute over your joints. Dilute the self-tanner on the knees, ankles, and elbows, because these areas tend to absorb more self-tanner than the rest of the skin. To dilute, lightly rub with a damp towel or apply a thin layer of lotion on top of the self-tanner.
  • Give your skin time to dry. Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed. For the next three hours, it is best to wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating.
  • Apply sunscreen every day. You still need to protect your skin with sunscreen. Be sure that your sunscreen is water resistant and a 30 SPF

A Personal Note From Dr. Nichols

Spring is officially here! And for me, that means it’s high season to help my patients repair and replenish their skin for spring after enduring a long and harsh season of winter.

Frequent air travel, family ski trips out west, and cold weather have all managed to wreak havoc on my own complexion as well. So, in this month’s blog I’ve including some quick tips on how to refresh your skin after winter and my #1 go-to skincare product to get glowing skin.

Hope to see you in the office soon so you can look and feel your best year-round!

PROCEDURE OF THE MONTH:  Redness Minimizer Laser!

*$395 – (Savings of $105!)

Our signature Redness Minimizer Laser helps to treat facial redness and broken capillaries.

At NicholsMD, we know that more than 61% of our patients are bothered by facial redness and broken capillaries. And this leads to an appearance of ruddiness and uneven skin tone. For this reason, we’re featuring our Redness Minimizer Laser all month long so you get that even, glowing skin that we all desire.

Our patients that have had the Redness Minimizer Laser describe it as causing “little to no discomfort”. The treatment can be done in 25 minutes or less, and we are so happy with our patient’s results when done in a series of 3. Check it out!

Ready to glow?

Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight improves the appearance of skin texture and tone to promote bright, glowing skin.

Formulated with a free acid value of 10% glycolic acid, the Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight product helps to exfoliate your skin and supports cell turnover.

This potent night cream is synergistically blended with 2% phytic acid to promote skin clarity and brightness, and a triple action-soothing complex to help support the skin barrier.

“Most glycolic products have less than 7% glycolic concentrations. Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight has a 10% glycolic concentration. This is what makes this medical-grade skincare product so unique and effective,” says Dr. Nichols.

Healthy Skin Starts with the Daily Use of Sunscreen

Patients always ask us – “Do I still have to use sunscreen every day even if it’s not the summer?” And the answer is a resounding, YES!

At NicholsMD, we believe beautiful skin is healthy skin. Taking vitamins high in vitamin D and applying sunscreen every day, helps to prevent signs of premature aging, protect your skin from discoloration and helps to keep your skin glowing.

The reason you need to use sunscreen year-round is that much of the sun damage that causes skin aging comes from UVA rays you are exposed to every day. “So even in the fall, winter, and spring you should apply sunscreen to your face, neck, chest, and the backs of your hands,” says Dr. Nichols, a Medical Council Member of The Skin Cancer Foundation

NicholsMD offers an array of sunscreen options for men, women, and teens that are elegant and gentle enough for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Request an appointment today for one of our skincare specialists to help customize a daily sun safety plan for you which includes a medical-grade sunscreen and vitamins, like Heliocare and vitamin D.

Tips For Relieving Dry Skin

Here are some of Dr. Nichols’ tips on how to relieve dry skin!

Limit your time in the shower to 5 or 10 minutes, and shower with warm rather than hot water.

Slather on the moisturizer immediately after drying your skin. “Aquaphor is one of my favorite moisturizing ointments for the body,” says Dr. Nichols. And, Triple Lipid Restore is NicholsMD’s most popular moisturizer for the face.

Carry a non-greasy hand cream with you, and apply it after you wash your hands. We love our SkinCeuticals’ Neck, Chest, and Hand Repair (now 15% off online!) to protect and correct our hands.

Wear lip balm. Chapped lips can be painful and bothersome. Protect your lips with a moisturizing ointment, like Aquaphor.

Wear gloves. Our hands are often the first place we notice dry skin. You can reduce dry, raw skin by regularly wearing gloves.

Invest in a good a humidifier to add moisture to your air!

If your dry skin persists or becomes more irritated, request an appointment with Dr. Nichols today!

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

It’s never too early and never too late to have great skin.

It’s what I want clients like you, , to remember each day.

And it was one of the many coveted skincare tips I shared during my “How to Look Radiant At Any Age” talk at Moffly Media’s Women In Business event last week!

At the talk, I mentioned something new and exclusive that we have been working on at NicholsMD: The Non-Surgical Greenwich Mommy Makeover! As a mother of 3, I know first-hand that moms want a consistently well-rested appearance and gala-ready body, but don’t want the downtime and risk involved with surgery.

So, we designed the NicholsMD Non-Surgical Greenwich Mommy MakeoverMakeover with this in mind. It’s 100% non-surgical, results-driven, and targeted for the busy Greenwich mom who wants to be her 2.0 self. I’m so excited to debut it in June 2018!

Speaking of Moms, here’s a picture of my mom, my director, Emily (a new mom!), and I at the YWCA Old Bags Luncheon!

And if you haven’t heard yet, my staff and I are gearing up for our BIG 5-YearAnniversary Party on June 13 (click here for details!), and you are all invited. I can’t wait to celebrate with all of you and thank you for your incredible loyalty and support. As I always tell people, I “skip to work,” because of the joy that working with clients like you brings me.

I really hope to see you at our upcoming Anniversary Party, and look forward to seeing you in the office soon.

Best,
Dr. Nichols

How to Treat a Bee Sting

Here are some simple tips from the American Board of Dermatology on how to treat a bee sting!

It can happen fast. One minute the kids are all playing peacefully outside on a warm, spring day. The next minute a piercing scream reveals that one them has been stung by a bee. To help alleviate the panic, it’s important to know what to do – and not do – to treat a bee sting.

Stay calm. Although most bees usually only sting once, wasps and hornets can sting again. If you are stung, calmly walk away from the area to avoid additional attacks.

Remove the stinger. If the stinger remains in your skin, remove it by scraping over it with your fingernail or a piece of gauze. Never use tweezers to remove a stinger, as squeezing it can cause more venom to release into your skin.

Wash the sting with soap and water.

Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling. However, if the swelling moves to other parts of your body, such as your face or neck, go to the emergency room immediately, as you might be having an allergic reaction. Other signs of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, nausea, hives, or dizziness.

Although most people do not experience severe reactions to bee stings, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on anyone who has been stung in case they develop more serious symptoms. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, or if you or someone you know has been stung multiple times – particularly if he or she is a child – seek medical attention immediately.

If you notice any redness, pus, or increased pain or swelling, make an appointment to see board-certified dermatologistDr. Kim Nichols.

Tips on How To Shave for Men and Women

Here are some simple tips from the American Board of Dermatology to help you and your partner get a clean shave!

Before you shave, wet your skin and hair to soften it. A great time to shave is right after a shower, as your skin will be warm, moist and free of excess oils and dead skin cells that can clog up your razor blade.

Next, apply a shaving cream or gel. If you have very dry or sensitive skin, look for a shaving cream that says “sensitive skin” on the label.

Shave in the direction that the hair grows. This is an important step to help prevent razor bumps and burns.

Rinse after each swipe of the razor. Make sure to also change your blade or throw away disposable razors after 5 to 7 shaves to minimize irritation.

Store your razor in a dry area. Between shaves, make sure your razor dries completely to prevent bacteria from growing on it.

At NicholsMD, we know shaving can be annoying and costly long-term. So, click here to request an appointment with our board-certified providers to learn about the permanent solutions we offer, like Laser Hair Removal, so we can help to keep you hair-free!

Procedure Spotlight: Microneedling!

This month NicholsMD is offering $100 off Microneedling with Growth Factor treatments!

Microneedling with Growth Factor*

 $475!* (Normally $575!)

Microneedling is an innovative treatment providing a solution to fine lines, discoloration, uneven skin texture, marks and scars. Over time, microneedling treatments beautifully brighten, smoothing and tighten the skin.

Microneedling involves using an instrument with very small needles that create temporary tiny punctures in the skin which trigger the skin’s natural wound-healing response to renew skin cells, produce collagen and stimulate elastin. The superficial micro-channels that are created allow topical serums (such as growth factor) to be absorbed deeply in the skin where they can produce the most benefit.

Microneedling can be done on people of all skin types and on all parts of the body; face, neck, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.

CoolSculpting in 45-Minutes

Summer Bodies Start in the Winter!

Summer Bodies Start in the Winter! January is the time to commit to your New Year’s Resolutions. So, we’ve selected this month’s procedure spotlight to be CoolSculpting, a procedure which non-surgically freezes away fat to help you look and feel like your best self in 2018.

CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared procedure that uses controlled cooling to safely target and remove diet and exercise-resistant fat. CoolSculpting technology delivers precisely-controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then disintegrate. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and dispenses these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you, especially in areas like the stomach, thighs, and under the chin!

CoolSculpting starts at $750 per area and you can save up to 33%* on your own transformative CoolSculpting treatment. *The more you buy, the more you save!

Not sure where to start? Schedule a consultation! NicholsMD offers complimentary, 360-degree Coolsculpting Consultations.

The #1 Aesthetic Treatment at NicholsMD in 2017 –> Dermaplaning!

As I reviewed the past year, I was not surprised that the #1 scheduled aesthetic treatment at NicholsMD was dermaplaning. This treatment uses a blade to gently remove dead skin and vellus hair (or peach fuzz) from the face revealing brighter looking skin. The best part of this treatment? Your products penetrate deeper and your skin is smoother, which not only feels great, but also allows make-up to be applied more evenly! With zero downtime, and only a $120 per treatment, this aesthetic treatment is a must-have before any event!

Insider’s Tip -> Upgrade the dermaplaning by adding an 24K gold masque with hyaluronic acid (a skincare ingredient that retains moisture) for the ultimate glow!

Stay Warm & Prevent Frostbite

With much of the country experiencing sub-zero temperatures, frostbite is a real threat. Keep these tips in mind before hitting the ski slopes or heading outdoors!

Dress in loose, light, comfortable layers: Wearing loose, light layers helps trap warm air. The first layer should be made of a synthetic material, which wicks moisture away from your body. The next layer should be insulating. Wool and fleece are good insulators and hold in more body heat than cotton. The top layer should be windproof and waterproof. A down parka and ski pants can help keep you dry and warm during outdoor activities.

Protect your feet and toes: To protect your feet and toes, wear two pairs of socks. The first pair, next to your skin, should be made of moisture-wicking fabric. Place a pair of wool or wool-blend socks on top of those. Your boots should also provide adequate insulation. They should be waterproof and cover your ankles. Make sure that nothing feels tight, as tight clothing increases the risk of frostbite.

Protect your hands: Wear insulated mittens or gloves to help protect your hands from the cold, like Katie French, M.S, PA-C pictured here!

Keep yourself hydrated: Becoming dehydrated also increases the risk of developing frostbite. Even if you are not thirsty, drink at least one glass of water before you head outside, and always drink water or a sports drink before an outdoor workout. In addition, avoid alcohol, as it increases your risk for frostbite.

Recognize the symptoms: In order to detect frostbite early, when it’s most treatable, it’s important to recognize the symptoms.  The first signs of frostbite include redness and a stinging, burning, throbbing or prickling sensation followed by numbness. If this occurs, head indoors immediately.
