Why You Should Start Using Anti-Aging Products in Your 20s
I get this question from my 20-something clients all the time: When is a good time to start an anti-aging regimen. My answer? Today.
In your twenties, it’s not about reversing signs of aging; it’s about preventing signs of aging. Beyond the daily use of an SPF 30 sunscreen, I tell my young clients that every client is an antioxidant client; so using serums with vitamins such as A, C, and E to prevent sun- and aging- damage is a perfect way to start protecting their skin . My most recommended antioxidant serums are SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic (applied in the morning) and SkinCeuticals Reservatrol (applied in the evening).
So, if you’re unsure where to start in amping up your skincare regimen, it’s my job (and my passion!) to take an assessment of your skin at your next facial appointment. At this appointment, together we can build you a simple, yet effective, age-appropriate skincare regimen.

The 4 Best Fruits to Eat for Absolutely Gorgeous Skin
We all know how important fruits and vegetables are for the health of your body AND skin! But did you know which ones specifically have the MOSTgood-for-your-skin benefits?
Cucumbers. Rich in water, cucumber is great for beautiful, hydrated skin. Cucumbers are packed with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), a powerful antioxidant.
Watermelon. Watermelon is made up of about 90 percent water, so it is also excellent for skin hydration.
Coconuts. Coconuts’ antimicrobial properties help to decrease skin irritation and inflammation.
Kiwis. Kiwis work wonders at keeping your complexion smooth, soft and firm. Kiwis are high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help to fight signs of premature aging.
Avocados. Loaded with healthy fat, avocados contain omega-9 fat oleic acid, which can help repair and revitalize skin cells. The fat in avocado is super- nourishing for skin, hair and nails.

Greetings from Bar Harbor, Maine! I just returned from an exhilarating family vacation hiking in beautiful Acadia National Park and eating way, way, too much lobster! For the many of you who gave me “where-to-go” advice for Bar Harbor, thank you! It all worked out beautifully.
Earlier this month, I was asked to speak to over 6,000 women in Nashville, TN at Avon’s national RepFest. Procedure Spotlight:
Micro-Needling with Hyaluronic Acid
This month, NicholsMD of Greenwich is highlighting our fabulous Micro-needling treatment with Hyaluronic Acid (only $350!). It is just what you need to get your skin looking fresh and beautiful for end-of-summer parties and vacations. And with little to no downtime, no one will know you got anything done! Although, we never mind if you tell your friends 🙂
Using an electric handheld device, 12 very-fine needles create thousands of micro-channels within the skin which stimulate collagen and allow the hylauronic acid to seep deep down into your skin hydrating it from within.
Micro-needling with Hylauronic Acid helps to minimize the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, and reverse signs of summer, like brown spots and discoloration.
How much sunscreen is too much? How much is too little?
First and foremost, sunscreen is non-negotiable. It should be applied properly and worn every day, year-round. Without daily application, you’re already applying too little and exposing your skin to premature aging as well as permanent skin damage!
A good rule of thumb is that you should be using a shot glass full of SPF for your entire body. This holds true for every time you reapply as well; which should be every 2 or 3 hours more frequently if you are engaging in water activities and/or participating in sports which cause excessive sweating.
What’s unique about this sunscreen is that it’s been tested by marathon runners; and has passed the test when it comes to protecting active, outdoor-loving kids and parents alike.
No matter which SPF you choose, it should be at least SPF 30 or higher and must be a Broad-Spectrum UVA/UVB.
Unsure what sunscreen is right for you? Let’s discuss your preferences and what you’re currently using during your next facial appointment to ensure it’s the best one possible for your skin type.

The Best Post-Summer Skin Tips
From soaking up too much sun to overdoing it on the champagne, summer can take a toll on your skin. Rather than letting the season of sand, sun and surf get the best of your complexion, nurse it back to health with these post-summer skincare tips.:
Return to your skincare regimen…CONSISTENTLY!Throw away the hotel samples, and stop making excuses to skip your PM regimen because you were on “vacation.” Religiously sticking to your skincare regimen will get you back on-track to maintaining your best skin, and helping your skin to recover from the harsh summer sun. Not sure where to start? Click here to request an appointment with NicholsMD’s product specialists!
Update your skincare regimen. As the season changes, your skin’s needs change too. You may need a thicker moisturizer (like Triple Lipid Restore) as the weather cools down. Most people also notice more obvious signs of sun damage post-summer, and tend to add a corrective product to even out skin tone, like the Advanced Pigment Corrector.

There has been so much going on at NicholsMD of Greenwich lately that you’ve been hearing from us more frequently! We want to make sure that clients like you have the first opportunity to take advantage of our favorite new services, such as our new Vitamin IV Therapy treatments.
I actually just returned from a national dermatology meeting in Aspen, Colorado where they focused on another trending new treatment -> PRP Micro-Needling. It’s one of the most asked-about treatments for both men and women because of its ability to dramatically improve skin aging, discoloration, acne scarring, and trigger hair re-growth!
This 60-minute treatment is a staff favorite, and just recently, I wrote a cover story about it in Practical Dermatology Magazine.
In between all of your family vacations and fun summer plans, I look forward to connecting with you soon to help you look and feel your most beautiful, confident self.

Question: “Can I schedule a chemical peel this summer?”
Answer: Of course!
Recently, I had a client say that she was going to wait to do her chemical peel until the fall because she didn’t think it was safe to do a peel in the summer. She was surprised when I told her that actually, she could do a peel in the summer. I reminded her that patients in sunny Florida or California have these treatments done year-round, so of course it’s safe to have a chemical peel during summer!
All you have to do after a chemical peel in the summer is to just be extra-diligent about your sun protection. This means reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours while you are out in the sun, wearing a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more, and wearing protective clothing, like a stylish, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
As a skincare professional, it’s my job to assess your skin at each appointment and treat you with the most safe and effective service at your every visit, and chemical peels are an easy way to brighten, tone, and even your skin year-round.

Is Sunscreen Bad for You?
From their ingredients to their efficacy, the sunscreen debate continues to be a big point of contention as many consumers have concerns regarding their safety. “Sunscreens are still effective and safe” says Greenwich, CT, dermatologist Kim Nichols, MD. “The days of thinking they are toxic are outdated.”
Myth 1: Sunscreen is toxic.
In recent years, sunscreen has faced some negative backlash. In particular, some have questioned whether the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens increase the risk of cancer, or whether nanotechnology (used in sunscreens to prevent active ingredients from leaving a white residue on the skin) is safe. The medical and scientific community has concluded that none of these claims about toxicity have been shown in people or proven in a lab. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) made an official statement saying that, “No published studies show that sunscreen is toxic to humans or hazardous to human health. Preventing skin cancer and sunburn outweigh any unproven claims of toxicity or human health hazard from ingredients in sunscreens.”
Myth 2: “Organic” sunscreens are better.
Labeling sunscreens as “organic” or “natural” is a misnomer. All sunscreens are made with synthetic materials; they are not made with plant-based ingredients. Instead, the correct way to categorize sunscreens is to label them as either chemical or physical. Chemical sunscreens(with active ingredients such as oxybenzone or avobenzone) protect the skin by absorbing the sun’s UV rays. Physical sunscreens (with active ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) protect the skin by deflecting the sun’s rays.
Myth 3: Experts recommend physical sunscreens over chemical ones.
The AAD has stated that between chemical and physical sunscreens, one is not better than the other. The most important factor to consider is making sure the sunscreen is broad-spectrum to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Dr. Nichols agrees. She says that she also doesn’t recommend one type over the other to her patients. : “When applied correctly (you should be using at least one shot-glass size amount of sunscreen for the full body), one type of sunscreen is not more effective than the other. As long as you wear a SPF of at least 30 every day, I do not have a preference for my clients to use one over the other.” However, the one warning that the AAD does give is that chemical sunscreens may be irritating for people with sensitive skin.
At NicholsMD, we offer various sunscreens – both clear and tinted, in spray or cream form, and those in an on-the-go mineral brush for easy repeat application.

Aesthetician’s Corner
As an aesthetician, I am always searching for what’s new in the aesthetics field to offer my clients the most cutting-edge treatments. This season’s skincare buzz? Cryo Facials.
During a typical Cryotherapy Facial, liquid nitrogen vapors are blown onto the skin. This creates a dramatically tightened appearance and also decreases inflammation. However, having cool vapor blown on your face can be a lot – so, with your comfort in mind, I am using the same ingredients, liquid nitrogen, via two thermal-cooling cryo wands. The delivery may be different, but the results are just as powerful.
Cryotherapy via our NicholsMD Cryo Wands helps to immediately de-puff the skin and calm sensitive areas because blood flow is stimulated and skin is tightened. These new NicholsMD Cryo Wands are weighted and awaken your facial muscles for a fresher, brighter appearance almost instantly.
When Dr. Nichols experienced the NicholsMD Cryo Wands as a client herself she said, “This is exactly what I need post-flight and travel.” The immediate relief from any eye puffiness is what makes the NicholsMD Cryo Wand a new aesthetic favorite!

5 Must Dos When You Have Sunburn
Being lobster-red isn’t pretty, nor is it comfortable.
You’re at risk for sunburn any time you can see your own shadow, and UV rays are strongest during summer months when the sun is directly overhead, normally between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. But, that doesn’t mean that while driving, on a cloudy day, or even at 5:00PM, you’re not at risk to burn, which is why we recommend you apply a SPF everyday regardless of the forecast, wear protective clothing, and reapply sunscreen of SPF 30 or more every two hours.
“Reapply sunscreen every two hours!”
-Dr. Kim Nichols
But what should you do if you do get sunburn?
Get out of the sun. If already burned, seek shade or go inside immediately. If you can’t immediately go indoors, cover your skin with protective clothing, a wide brimmed hat and/or protective eye wear.
Decrease the inflammation by taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen. This can help with discomfort and inflammation, and it’s safe to take NSAIDs as directed until the burn and discomfort subsides.
Take a cold bath. Tip: don’t shower or use soap. The shower head will not help already compromised skin heal and using soaps will dry out the skin. Gently soaking in a cool tub is best. Another Tip: Adding oats or 2 scoops of baking soda has added benefits of retaining the skin’s moisture in your cool tub.
Hydrate. Start drinking water immediately. Sunburn causes severe dehydration, fatigue and even heat stroke, so drink more than you think or usually do. Tip: coconut or waters with added electrolytes can be effective in preventing dehydration, but avoid sugary drinks – this will dehydrate you further. And, beginning July 1, NicholsMD is now scheduling Vitamin IV Therapy to replenish your body with essential minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins with our new IV Hydration Therapy in 40 minutes or less.
Prevent. Don’t get burned twice. Schedule an appointment for a prescription topical cream and antihistamine for more severe sunburns. It’s also not uncommon for your skin to have permanent cosmetic skin damage, like discoloration, from one bad burn. Treatments are available to reverse years of sun-damage.

Make Your Vacation Skin-Friendly
At NicholsMD, we know that taking a break from it all and indulging in a vacation is vital to your mental health. And here are some tips to make your next vacation skin-friendly:
Prepare beforehand.Think about the trip to come. Will you be on a plane? Going to a dry climate? Prepare your skin before you leave. Exfoliate gently and schedule a pre-vacation hydrating Oxygen Facial to make sure your skin is in good shape before you leave!
Pack wisely. Take along travel sizes of the skincare products already in your daily regimen. Hotel products (even the expensive brands) are made to be one-size-fits-all, and may not be a good idea for your specific skin type. You don’t want to spend your vacation dealing with an irritation or breakout caused by the wrong generic hotel products. And you don’t have to take everything – but make sure you have the essentials – a powerful antioxidant like CE Ferulic and an all-in-one age-reversal powerhouse such as Reservatrol.
Protect! Don’t forget your sunscreen! Even if you’re going to be inside a plane all day, your skin needs the protection of a good sunscreen from UVA rays coming through windows. Reapply every 2 hours, and apply at least an SPF30 to your full face and body. And, for the month of May, our SkinCeuticals sunscreens are 10% off in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month!
Drink even more water than you usually do. To help counteract those sugar-laden pina coladas, you’ll need to drink plenty of water while on vacation. It will help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
Ice under the eyes. Under-eye circles often result from a long day of traveling, and we know you don’t have time to appear tired! If you find you’ve already developed them while on the plane, ask the airline attendant for some crushed ice and a napkin. Apply the self-made ice pack under your eyes. You can repeat this process before bed the first night to wake up looking more refreshed. Don’t forget to apply your eye cream, like Skinceuticals’ A.G.E Eye Complex, to counteract under-eye dryness and reduce the appearance of fine lines, too.
So, when considering how to take care of your skin on the road, remember this: prepare in advance, don’t skip your regimen, and drink plenty of water. You will look as rested as your feel when you return from your vacation.
Happy Traveling!

Healthy hair is coveted. And your diet can go a long way in helping keep your hair strong. Below are some power foods to have healthier, fuller hair:
Brown rice
Brown rice is rich in vital minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, phosphorous, zinc, iron, and selenium. It also contains essential vitamins, such as vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B6, vitamin E and also vitamin K. These nutrients found in brown rice encourage cell growth and blood supply to the scalp, making them a perfect ingredient to treat damaged or thinning hair.
Eggs
Eggs are almost everyone’s morning best friend, and they’re a great source of the B vitamin, biotin. Biotin gets special attention for its role in strengthening the hair cortex, keeping your locks more resistant to environmental and styling damage. This is why I always recommend NicholsMD’s biotin vitamin when clients come to me with goals to help grow thicker, fuller hair.
Sesame Seeds
These tiny nutritional powerhouses are packed with magnesium, a mineral that has been shown to alleviate inflammation that can be associated with hair loss. Magnesium also plays a large role in cell growth and maturation, meaning that a diet high in magnesium can play a role in supporting healthy strong hair.
At NicholsMD, we know that diet alone won’t get you the thicker, fuller hair that you may desire, but eating the right super foods helps will complement the results of your hair restorative treatments, such as PRP Injections and our prescribed home hair and scalp regimens.
Schedule an appointment with NicholsMD today to have our staff customize a full treatment plan right for you. PS. We also offer convenient evening and Saturdayappointments!

First and foremost, thank you to those that celebrated with me at our NicholsMD SkinCeuticals Flagship LaunchParty! The attendance was unbelievable and we couldn’t have had a more fabulous evening! I hope that those of you who came had a great time too and enjoyed your goodie bags filled with one of my favorite, antioxidant-filled product: CE Ferulic.
Here are some of the fun snapshots taken that night, courtesy of Fairfield County LOOK!
That same week, I had the pleasure of walking the runway at Serendipity’s Fashion Night Out, on behalf of the Greater New York chapter of The American Red Cross. It was a hoot and I had so much fun backstage with my fellow “models” who were walking for their favorite charities. And my NicholsMD team was there, too, cheering for me and administering B12 shots at our table. People were lined up!
Outside the office, my husband and I have been busy traveling, too! He joined me at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in Orlando where I attended professional seminars and live demonstrations on the latest and greatest in the cosmetic, dermatology industry. I like to stay up-to-date so NicholsMD can continue to be a leading dermatology office in offering the most innovative techniques and devices to have you looking your best year-round.

Procedure Spotlight: Sculptra™
Over time, your skin loses its full, firm, youthful appearance. This is part of the natural aging process and is accelerated by damage done to our skin by the sun and environment. Collagen and fat tissue that once filled out your face giving you those plump cheeks and defined jawline are now lost. Thus, your face may look thinner, more narrow, and your skin becomes loose and starts to wrinkle in places you never expected. Sculptra™ at NicholsMD could be exactly what you’re looking for!
Sculptra™ is an injectable facial filler that builds your own collagen, providing subtle yet dramatic results that appear gradually and get better with time. Sculptra™, known as the non-invasive liquid lift, restores volume to your skin by encouraging significant new collagen growth, giving you a more youthful appearance.
Sculptra™ works in the lower layers of the skin to smooth and firm the treated areas of the face. The full effects are not immediate and can take several months to develop, but the long-lasting effects of Sculptra™ make it well worth the wait! This treatment is great for both first-timers to fillers who don’t want to look drastically different overnight, and also filler-veterans who want a longer-lasting filler (Sculptra can last 2-3 years!).
Sculptra can be used to correct:
Deep facial wrinkles and folds

Procedure Spotlight: Kybella
Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a revolutionary, non-invasive injectable treatment method for the removal of submental fullness, commonly known as the “double chin”. And, it’s NicholsMD’s second most popular procedure for men in our office, with PRP injections for hair loss being the #1 most popular treatment for men.
Kybella is clinically-proven to target and eliminate fat deposits in the neck involving a series of multiple injections under the chin. The injections contain a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found within the body that facilitates the breakdown and absorption of fat cells in your stomach. Kybella targets and eliminates fat cells permanently, meaning the results last, without maintenance, so say goodbye to your double-chin!
An initial consultation prior to each session will help determine the specifics of your treatment, but the treatment is fast and easy: a few series of 15 to 20 minute sessions for the injections! Kybella is administered by our Allergan-trained, board-certified providers, Dr. Kim Nichols and Katie French, M.S, PA-C.
One our NicholsMD’s male clients states, “I was very numb, only felt about a quarter of the pinch of the injections.” His wife and friends have already noticed a more defined jawline and many have asked if he’s lost weight! He is currently on his third treatment and already sees a slimmer, more youthful facial appearance despite only having Kybella for his under-chin!
REAL RESULTS:
At NicholsMD, we also understand that our male clients have unique needs and motivations. That’s why we offer convenient hours, like evenings and Saturdays, for working men to visit NicholsMD. We also offer a male-inspired exam room, so you feel completely at ease throughout your appointment.
Kybella® targets and eliminates fat cells permanently, for both men and women, meaning the results last, and there’s no maintenance needed.
Say goodbye to your double-chin!

Skin Health Tips You Must Know When Working Out
Working out without wreaking havoc on your face isn’t easy, especially if you’re trying to fit exercise into your workday. But with planning and preparation it can be done! Here are a few beauty tips that as a gym go-er, you must know.
Clean Skin. Let’s get this clear right now: Skin needs to breathe during a workout — and sweat mixed with beauty products doesn’t let that happen. For best results, you really should wash your face both before and after your workout. The post-workout wash will remove residual bacteria or products (such as hair gel that’s migrated from your bangs) from your face before they can cause breakouts.
Face wipes are your friend! Nowhere to wash after your workout? Face wipes with glycolic or salicylic acid can help in a pinch. So stash a pack in your pocket or gym bag.
Cleanse Post-Workout. Sweat and bacteria can wreak havoc on other areas of your skin as well, so showering off after a tough workout is ideal, especially if you’re prone to back or chest acne, so always carry your favorite cleanser in your workout bag!
Don’t Mistake Convenience For Quality. You’ve seen them in every gym locker-room shower and on every vanity counter — bottles of generic soap, shampoo and body lotion. And while they might work in a pinch, they’re often not the quality, customized products you should be using daily. So, always buy or create your own travel sizes of the same products you use at home to avoid any allergic reactions and maintain consistency in your routine for a clear, smooth complexion!
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking. Water is good for your skin, as your skin is your body’s largest organ and dehydrated skin appears dry, scaly, dull, less plump causing you to appear more tired. I commonly recommend eight, 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon for a fresher, more hydrated you.
P.S Need a pick-me-up in energy? NicholsMD offers B12 and B-Complex vitamin injections, great for muscle recovery and to boost metabolism to keep you looking and feeling good even after the gym!

Procedure Spotlight: Hand Rejuvenation
Are your hands giving away your age?
Believe it or not, our hands can start looking “older” as early as our 20s, at a substantially faster rate than our faces. With loss of collagen and subcutaneous fat, the crepey lines and wrinkles, tendons, bones and veins in our hands become more prominent. Since most of us were not applying sunscreen to the backs of our hands everyday for the last 20 years, how can we gracefully turn back the clock?
The answer: NicholsMD’s Hand Rejuvenation, using Radiesse® and the Fraxel Dual Laser.
Radiesse® is a dermal filler that is FDA-approved for volume loss in the hands. It is injected into specific areas of the hand to provide smooth, youthful looking results that last up to one year. It takes away the brown spots revealing clear, beautiful hands. This combination of Radiesse and Fraxel is what makes the Hand Rejuvenation treatment by NicholsMD so one-of-a-kind.
Dr. Nichols and Katie French PA-C have been uniquely trained as expert injectors to administer Radiesse® into the hands. Request an appointment today to learn more about this procedure with instant, natural-looking results with little to no downtime.
REAL RESULTS:
Radiesse® is a dermal filler that is FDA-approved for volume loss in the hands, that stimulates your body’s own natural collagen.

Sunscreen in the Winter?
Starting in December, we always get this question from our clients – “Do I still have to use sunscreen in the winter?” And the answer is a resounding, YES!!
As we all know, sunscreens prevent signs of premature aging, protect your skin from discoloration, and help to keep your skin healthy and glowing. The reason you need to use sunscreen all year-round is because much of the sun damage that causes skin aging comes from UVA rays, the kind you are exposed to everyday from walking around any time of year. So even in the winter, you should apply sunscreen to your face, neck, chest (V-neck sweaters!), and the backs of your hands,” says Dr. Nichols, who is a Medical Council Member of The Skin Cancer Foundation.
And remember, the type of sunscreen that is appropriate for your skin type may change with the time of year – something lighter or sheer in the summer and one more moisturizing in the winter. NicholsMD offers an array of sunscreen options for different seasons, and for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin. Request an appointment today to have an annual full body skin exam. At your appointment, we will give you personalized sunscreen recommendations for your exact skin type and lifestyle!
