An early Happy Thanksgiving to you! I hope you are enjoying this crisp fall weather and getting ready to celebrate the season with your families.
Here at NicholsMD, we are deep into our busy pre-holiday season, helping our clients look their best for all the holiday social events coming up. One thing that always comes up during these times is food. Lots and lots of food! We all tend to eat a lot more than normal during the holidays, and not all of it is very good for us. But we also need to indulge once in a while and enjoy the good times without any restrictions! So what can you do the rest of the time to eat the best you can for beautiful healthy skin? In the educational article below, I discuss some of the best foods you can eat to keep you looking your best from the inside out.
Speaking of strong, beautiful, and confident women, here is my office manager, Emily (still on maternity leave), speaking at the SkinCeuticals Insiders’ event this weekend doing a presentation on “How-To Guide to Building a Cosmetic Empire. ” She was amazing! I’m so proud!
Have a great time this Thanksgiving and be thankful for being the strong, beautiful and confident person you are!
Best,
Dr. Nichols
One of the first things we notice about someone is their eyes, which can be a true tell of their age. Puffiness, crepiness, and wrinkling around the eye area are common as we age because the skin is so thin. Clients often ask what can be done to treat this delicate area? We have the ultimate eye rejuvenation solution for you Ultherapy and Xeomin.
Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared treatment that uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin and help stimulate collagen – with NO downtime! By delivering micro-focused energy to certain depths at just the right temperature, Ultherapy helps trigger the regenerative process to produce new collagen. Our Ultherapy under-eye treatment is relatively quick and results take about 3-4 months to fully set in. While you will notice a tightened and more youthful appearance around the eye, this treatment is very preventative as well.
About 1 week after your Ultherapy treatment, Xeomin can then be administered to the crows’ feet area as a finishing touch. Just like Botox, Xeomin relaxes the muscle contraction that creates the wrinkles around the lateral part of the eye. Results take about 1 week to set in, and lines and wrinkles are softened dramatically.
Christie Brinkley is now the official spokeswoman for both Ultherapy and Xeomin (and who wouldn’t want to look as good as she does!) Here’s what she had to say about the treatments to People magazine:
“It was like a non-invasive pick-me-up. When I look in the mirror, I want to feel like I look as good as I feel. And if you can have something done to feel more confident and better about yourself, then you feel like your face matches your spirit – and my spirit is enthusiastic and energetic.”
What NOT to do for good skin!
There are many bad habits people have in terms of skin care that they don’t think will actually affect them. Truth is, what you’re doing to your skin now may not seem so bad, but it will negatively affect your “future skin” in terms of how it will look, feel, and age. Here are a few tips of what NOT to do for good skin
DO NOT over exfoliate your skin.We are told to exfoliate for cell regeneration and to get the dead skin cells off of the surface. However, less is more! When you over-exfoliate your skin with harsh products (i.e. St. Ive’s facial scrub – yuck!) you are actually stripping down your skins’ natural barrier and leaving it open and vulnerable to sun exposure and harmful bacteria. This can leave your skin irritated and even damaged. Everyone’s skin is different and can tolerate different things, but keep your mechanical “scrub” exfoliation or Clarisonic brush to only one to two times a week. If you are using chemical exfoliation such as AHA/BHA acids or Retinol, you may not need to do any other exfoliation. Once a month, come in to NicholsMD for a professional exfoliation treatment such as dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, a chemical peel, or a laser treatment.
DO NOT pick and pop your own pimples. So many people think popping pimples will help the situation, which more often than not, actually makes it worse. The bacteria from under your fingernails can spread and cause more breakouts, and the pressure from your nails can cause scarring. There are also papules that aren’t meant to be popped and just need to heal on their own or be treated in the aesthetician’s room with chemical exfoliation, high-frequency currents or LED light therapy. So please, save your skin and leave the extracting to the professionals!
DO NOT go to sleep without washing your face. No matter how tired you are, it is imperative to wash your makeup off at night. Without washing, your skin is harboring bacteria and is getting clogged and congested which leads to breakouts and large pores. Our skin rejuvenates itself overnight, so it is super important to wash off all of the day’s debris. Take the extra few minutes to go to bed with clean skin and apply a few good products to help repair and rejuvenate your skin overnight.
Lastly but most importantly – DO NOT skip out on SPF! Believe it or not, SPF is the number one anti-aging product because the sun’s harmful rays are the number one thing that cause pre-mature aging, and even worse, skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum SPF like SkinCeuticals Physical UV Defense SPF 50 and protect your skin. Your future skin will thank you for it!

Becoming a mother at 19, I never imagined I would suffer from incontinence so early in life. Getting back into shape as fast as I would like to was difficult because many things caused incontinence. I couldn’t run as fast as I used to; I couldn’t jump rope with my daughter; I avoided laughing too hard because I would leak. I was told over and over again by my gynecologist and urologist, that kegel exercises were the only thing that could help. But let’s be honest, how many times can someone remember to do kegels throughout the day?
It wasn’t until I began working for NicholsMD and I was asked if I would like to try their new device for laser feminine rejuvenation, the CO2RE Intima. I finally had hope that I would no longer struggle with incontinence. I can’t emphasize enough how the CO2RE Intima changed my life. It painless and effective. A month after my first treatment, I noticed an improvement with my incontinence problem as well as an improvement in sexual gratification. I highly recommend this procedure. It truly helped boost my confidence and most importantly I am able to jump and play with my daughter.
Growing up, I loved wearing makeup. Especially because it helped cover blemishes and acne. Many times I would wonder why my skin would still breakout. I felt like I had tried all of the cleansers you can find to help aid acne. I never felt confident enough to leave my house with a bare face until now.
After using Skinceuticals LHA Cleansing Gel for little over a year, there has been a drastic improvement in my skin. It’s clearer, brighter and even feels firmer! I never skip a day or night without washing my face with LHA Cleansing Gel. This gel-to-foam cleanser helps clarify your skin by gently exfoliating dead skin cells and decongesting your pores, and with the help of its main ingredient, lipo hydroxyacid, it also diminishes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and rough texture.

This month, we are launching a new unique Laser treatment called LaserGenesis.
LaserGenesis – Beautiful, glowing skin with ZERO downtime!
Treat fine lines, enlarged pores, rough texture, scars, redness and pigmentation all in one treatment!
LaserGenesis gently heats the skin below the surface to stimulate your own natural collagen for smoother, firmer skin. This procedure treats fine lines, wrinkles, improves skin elasticity, and can help with tiny veins and broken capillaries as well as uneven texture and skin tone. Immediately post treatment your skin will be a little pink, but then will quickly give off a fresh, youthful glow.
The treatment is completely painless and can be done in 30-40 minutes. It is perfect right before an event, and even brides can do it the morning of their wedding!
Try it this month for only $325 a session (special offer for the month of October). LaserGenesis can be done as soon as every two weeks. Get the glow!
Clients often ask me why they should be using medical-grade skincare products, like SkinCeuticals, instead of over-the-counter products.
Here are 3 reasons why it’s worth it to make the investment in medical-grade scientifically-proven skin care products.
#1 Medical-grade products contain higher concentrations of active ingredients, which help them to actually penetrate the skin effectively.
#2 Over-the-counter products are not FDA-approved to treat below the outermost layer of dead skin, which means they are just sitting on the surface and not actually helping to treat the condition of your skin. This is because they are not penetrating to the “live” skin, the dermis.
#3 Medical-grade products are backed by science. Companies spend years and years of clinical research on products before actually launching them onto the market.
Overall, it is always better to choose medical-grade over department store products if you want products that actually work and have the ability to transform your skin. Come to NicholsMD today to speak with a skin care specialist about which SkinCeuticals products are best for you.

October is national bullying prevention month. Bullying among today’s youth has become increasingly common, especially with increased rates from cyber-bullying. Up to 77% of teenagers report they have been bullied at school, with acne being one of the leading causes for teens and young adults to feel targeted.
Acne can impact a person across the lifespan, ranging from teens to young adults, and adults. This skin condition whether it be mild breakouts to severe cystic acne, affects a person’s confidence and self-esteem.
It is important that parents understand how acne may affect their child. There are so many new, effective acne regimens and treatments that can minimize signs of acne, prevent future breakouts, and reduce signs or appearance of permanent acne scarring.
At NicholsMD, you or your teen will receive a comprehensive skin exam where we will target the exact problem areas while also hearing your own skincare goals.
NicholsMD has a myriad options including unique step-by-step at-home acne regimens, gentle LED light therapy options, effective laser facials, soothing teen facials, and more.
If you are concerned about how your teen’s acne may be affecting his or her self-esteem, request an appointment with us. We will develop an effective treatment plan for their acne to help them feel more confident this school year.

With the kids back in school now, it’s time to re-focus on taking care of A#1! Whether this month you’re focusing on eating right (more on that below!), or erasing the damage that summer has done, at NicholsMD, we’ve got you covered.
I’m proud to announce two new treatments at NicholsMD this September: the CryoCorrect Pen and the LaserGenesis treatment! The CryoCorrect Pen by SkinCeuticals is a targeted sun- and age-spot remover that gets rid of pesky spots in 1-2 treatments! Check it out in this week’s issue of UsWeekly (on stands now!)
That’s me with Melissa Joan Hart in my office recently!
Meet our newest age and brown spot-remover treatment: The CryoCorrect Pen.
This month, SkinCeuticals launched The CryoCorrect Pen, which removes unwanted age and brown spots in as little as one treatment!
Unlike traditional cryotherapy, The CryoCorrect Pen at NicholsMD works by dispersing a precise and targeted amount of carbon dioxide to safely and efficiently freeze away skin tags, and unwanted age and brown spots.
As a nationally-recognized SkinCeuticals’ flagship office, we have this in-office medical treatment available to you first, starting at only $150.
Why You Should Start Using Anti-Aging Products in Your 20s
I get this question from my 20-something clients all the time: When is a good time to start an anti-aging regimen. My answer? Today.
In your twenties, it’s not about reversing signs of aging; it’s about preventing signs of aging. Beyond the daily use of an SPF 30 sunscreen, I tell my young clients that every client is an antioxidant client; so using serums with vitamins such as A, C, and E to prevent sun- and aging- damage is a perfect way to start protecting their skin . My most recommended antioxidant serums are SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic (applied in the morning) and SkinCeuticals Reservatrol (applied in the evening).
So, if you’re unsure where to start in amping up your skincare regimen, it’s my job (and my passion!) to take an assessment of your skin at your next facial appointment. At this appointment, together we can build you a simple, yet effective, age-appropriate skincare regimen.

Although, we never mind if you tell your friends 🙂
Using an electric handheld device, 12 very-fine needles create thousands of micro-channels within the skin which stimulate collagen and allow the hylauronic acid to seep deep down into your skin hydrating it from within.
Micro-needling with Hylauronic Acid helps to minimize the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, and reverse signs of summer, like brown spots and discoloration.
New Beauty Magazine showcased our client’s real Before and After results in their nationally-released video. Click here to watch what celebrities cherish micro-needling as their top beauty treatment of choice, too!
How much sunscreen is too much? How much is too little?
First and foremost, sunscreen is non-negotiable. It should be applied properly and worn every day, year-round. Without daily application, you’re already applying too little and exposing your skin to premature aging as well as permanent skin damage!
A good rule of thumb is that you should be using a shot glass full of SPF for your entire body. This holds true for every time you reapply as well; which should be every 2 or 3 hours more frequently if you are engaging in water activities and/or participating in sports which cause excessive sweating.
Check out our Product of the Month SkinCeuticals SPF 50 Sport UV Defense!
What’s unique about this sunscreen is that it’s been tested by marathon runners; and has passed the test when it comes to protecting active, outdoor-loving kids and parents alike.
No matter which SPF you choose, it should be at least SPF 30 or higher and must be a Broad-Spectrum UVA/UVB.
Unsure what sunscreen is right for you? Let’s discuss your preferences and what you’re currently using during your next facial appointment to ensure it’s the best one possible for your skin type.

As an aesthetician, I am always searching for what’s new in the aesthetics field to offer my clients the most cutting-edge treatments. This season’s skincare buzz? Cryo Facials.
During a typical Cryotherapy Facial, liquid nitrogen vapors are blown onto the skin. This creates a dramatically tightened appearance and also decreases inflammation. However, having cool vapor blown on your face can be a lot – so, with your comfort in mind, I am using the same ingredients, liquid nitrogen, via two thermal-cooling cryo wands. The delivery may be different, but the results are just as powerful.
Cryotherapy via our NicholsMD Cryo Wands helps to immediately de-puff the skin and calm sensitive areas because blood flow is stimulated and skin is tightened. These new NicholsMD Cryo Wands are weighted and awaken your facial muscles for a fresher, brighter appearance almost instantly.
When Dr. Nichols experienced the NicholsMD Cryo Wands as a client herself she said, “This is exactly what I need post-flight and travel.” The immediate relief from any eye puffiness is what makes the NicholsMD Cryo Wand a new aesthetic favorite!

Being lobster-red isn’t pretty, nor is it comfortable.
You’re at risk for sunburn any time you can see your own shadow, and UV rays are strongest during summer months when the sun is directly overhead, normally between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. But, that doesn’t mean that while driving, on a cloudy day, or even at 5:00PM, you’re not at risk to burn, which is why we recommend you apply a SPF everyday regardless of the forecast, wear protective clothing, and reapply sunscreen of SPF 30 or more every two hours.
“Reapply sunscreen every two hours!”
-Dr. Kim Nichols
But what should you do if you do get sunburn?
Get out of the sun. If already burned, seek shade or go inside immediately. If you can’t immediately go indoors, cover your skin with protective clothing, a wide brimmed hat and/or protective eye wear.
Decrease the inflammation by taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen. This can help with discomfort and inflammation, and it’s safe to take NSAIDs as directed until the burn and discomfort subsides.
Take a cold bath. Tip: don’t shower or use soap. The shower head will not help already compromised skin heal and using soaps will dry out the skin. Gently soaking in a cool tub is best. Another Tip: Adding oats or 2 scoops of baking soda has added benefits of retaining the skin’s moisture in your cool tub.
Moisturize. And Moisturize Again. Aloe and Vitamin E are great in helping to reduce redness and inflammation of sunburned skin. When your skin is burned, keeping your skin hydrated is key. Our #1 recommend product when a client calls with a harsh sunburn is SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel. We tell clients to apply this soothing cucumber gel twice daily to calm the red, irritated areas. (PS. This Phyto Corrective Gel is now 15% off online as our June Product of the Month!)
Hydrate. Start drinking water immediately. Sunburn causes severe dehydration, fatigue and even heat stroke, so drink more than you think or usually do. Tip: coconut or waters with added electrolytes can be effective in preventing dehydration, but avoid sugary drinks – this will dehydrate you further. And, beginning July 1, NicholsMD is now scheduling Vitamin IV Therapy to replenish your body with essential minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins with our new IV Hydration Therapy in 40 minutes or less.
Prevent. Don’t get burned twice. Schedule an appointment for a prescription topical cream and antihistamine for more severe sunburns. It’s also not uncommon for your skin to have permanent cosmetic skin damage, like discoloration, from one bad burn. Treatments are available to reverse years of sun-damage.
