A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

What’s better than summer vacations and travel? We love hearing about our clients’ trips to exotic places like the Serengeti or the Malfi Coast; and our teenage patients regarding about their summer adventures, hiking in Colorado or exploring ancient ruins in Israel; or just hearing stories about family vacation weeks in Martha’s Vineyard or fun at summer camp. It’s all so fascinating and just makes me want to pick up and go myself. 🙂

Speaking of, many of you may know that Andria’s recently returned from her 2-week trip to Europe for her sister’s wedding. She came back refreshed, looking great, and bursting with new procedure ideas straight from London’s hottest cosmetic dermatology offices and spas. Once she said was all the rage was LED light therapy, which I am happy to say we are implementing immediately. LED blue and red light 20-minute treatments are an invigorating way to improve the quality and glow of your skin and help to eliminate stubborn acne. Definitely ask about LED the next time you call or come by our office. You’re going to love it!

Well, I’m off to the Outer Banks with the extended family for a week of R&R. I know…watch out for sharks…:) But the staff will be in the office all next week so come in for aesthetic treatments with Andria, or stop by to meet our new administrative assistant, Emily (see below).

Enjoy your summer travel adventures and we hope to see you in the office soon!

Best regards,

Dr. Nichols

More on Vitamins and Healthy Skin

Taking vitamins in pill form is fine, but because the bulk of them are eliminated quickly through the body, they have little, if any, effect on your skin health. However, when used topically or injected intra-muscularly, certain vitamins can have both preventative and restorative properties to the skin.
VITAMIN A
Vitamin A (also known as retinoic acid) is the most-studied vitamin in skin care. And it’s been found to have a host of important functions and benefits.
  • Acne and acne-related dark marks
Many of us are most familiar with vitamin A as a treatment for acne. Vitamin A derivatives called retinoids (such as oral Accutane or topical Retin-A) normalize the way in which dead skin cells slough away, minimizing the clogging of pores that leads to the formation of acne. And because retinoids increase cell turnover, they also speed up the removal of acne dark marks and other discoloration on the skin.
  • Antioxidant-Prevents wrinkles and sun spotsThe sun, aging, cigarettes, pollutants, and other producers of free radicals exert a hefty toll of oxidative damage on skin cells. Vitamin A in the skin works to eliminate these free radicals, and is therefore, a powerful agent in preventing or slowing down the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Boosts collagen production-Decreases wrinkles
As an anti-aging ingredient, Vitamin A (aka retinoic acid or retinol) not only prevents skin damage but also repairs it. It does this by stimulating the production of new collagen.
VITAMIN B
Vitamin B12 and B-complex shots have been around forever; and many people, including a lot of our clients, swear by them. Although, they are not a substitute for a good diet and exercise, they can be a great supplement to boost an already healthy lifestyle. At our office we recommend starting with a loading dose of the injections once a week for the first month and then once a month (or more) for maintenance.
  • B12 vitamin

Helpful for elevating mood, energy, improving metabolism, boosting the immune system, and slowing aging.

  • B-complex vitamins
Refers to the essential water-soluble vitamins, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3),pantothenic acid (B5), pyroxidine (B6), biotin, folic acid, and the cobalamins. The B-complex vitamins are necessary for proper cell function. Benefits include promotion of healthy skin, hair and nails, good digestion, and maintenance of a healthy nervous system.
VITAMIN C
Vitamin C (also known as absorbic acid) is #2 to Vitamin A as an anti-aging powerhouse. It is an essential component of our skin structure and is vital for maintaining healthy, young skin. However, as we age, our body produces less of it naturally. Therefore, we need to replenish it exogenously.
  • Critical in collagen production-Prevents wrinkles
Vitamin C is a central molecule in collagen synthesis. As we get older, vitamin C decreases, collagen diminishes and wrinkles form. By adding vitamin C to our skin, we increase collagen formation again and decrease lines and wrinkles.
  • Antioxidant-Protects against and repairs sun spots and lines
Vitamin C protects skin cells against UV-induced free radicals. Therefore, it is very important in helping to reduce signs of photo damage such as discoloration (brown spots and melasma), lines and wrinkles. And research has shown that when used in combination with vitamin E, the combined vitamin C/E formulation is an even more powerful antioxidant than either vitamin alone.
  • The best way to replace Vitamin C is topically
Studies have shown that vitamin C is absorbed in the skin much better than when taken orally. Vitamin C products should contain 3-20% absorbic acid and should be applied in the morning under sunscreen.
VITAMIN E
As previously mentioned, Vitamin E (also known as tocopherol) is an important antioxidant in the skin. However, despite common belief, it is not a magical healer of wounds and scars.
  • Vitamin E does NOT improve scar healing and it can even make matters worse
One of the most enduring old wives’ tales is that vitamin E is a great home remedy to prevent and remove scars. However, multiple large studies have debunked that myth. Head-to-head with placebo, vitamin E has been shown to have no improved effect on the speed or appearance of scars as compared to nothing at all. And, in fact, in one large study, almost a third of the study participants got an allergic reaction to the vitamin E that caused their final scars to look even worse.
VITAMIN K
Vitamin K has gained popularity as an ingredient in eye creams and serums; mainly because it helps to reduce the worsening of under-eye dark circles.
  • Decreases the leakage of blood from under-eye blood vessels
Creams with vitamin K can help to prevent dark circles from getting worse. However, they may not improve dark circles that are already severely-hyperpigmented.

News12 CT demonstrating the Skin Scope LED
It may be a scary sight (notice our “model’s” reaction), but everyone should get under the
Skinceuticals Skin Scope LED to see what’s really going on with their skin. This diagnostic tool uses full-face UV light to illuminate sub-surface skin concerns that may be barely visible in normal light. Issues like sun damage, wrinkles, redness, congested pores, irritation and dryness can be seen in detail, up close and personal. The Skin Scope not only helps to educate patients about the state of their skin currently; it is also serves as a visible marker of progress, as they undergo skin care regimens and procedures aimed at improving the quality of their skin.

We have a bunch of new and exciting procedures to tell you about – like CoolSculpting, the non-surgical way to lose stubborn inches; and Ultherapy, the non-invasive skin tightening device that we are using not only on faces and necks, but also on sagging knees, floppy arms, and loose stomachs…with great results! Due to popular demand, we now have evening hours 2 nights per month. Inquire within to book an appointment!
Here Comes the Sun!

With spring here and summer on it’s way, here are some tips on how to enjoy the sunny weather safely:

1. Apply physical sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Physical sunscreen is the white stuff with the ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The chemical sunscreens don’t work half as well, and can be irritating to some people. And the good news is that the physical sunscreens are much more cosmetically-appealing these days. No more of the white chalky stuff you used to only apply on your nose!

2. Apply a LOT of sunscreen and reapply it a LOT! Most of us apply way to little sunscreen to get adequate coverage from both UVA and UVB rays. For adults, a convenient guideline is to apply one teaspoon for your face and scalp, two teaspoons for your neck and torso, one teaspoon for each arm, and two teaspoons for each leg and foot. For kids, you can apply about half as much depending upon how big they are. Basically, cover them from head to toe and don’t worry about rubbing it all in. If it doesn’t all rub in before they run away from you, that’s actually a good thing.

3. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go into the sun and reapply every 2 hours. You’ve heard this one before, but it’s worth repeating. Sunscreen needs at least 15-30 minutes to absorb into your skin to be protective, and becomes inert after about 2 hours. And although “water-resistant” sunscreen is helpful, it’s still best to reapply after swimming (even if it hasn’t been 2 hours yet).

4. Avoid the height of the sun hours between 10am and 2pm. This is pretty easy for us because we have little kids who need lunch and naps during these times anyway. However, it’s a good policy for everyone. Try to use most of those intensely strong UV hours to take a break, go get some lunch and switch your activities to shady areas.

5. Get your Vitamin D from your diet not the sun. We all know that Vitamin D is essential to maintain healthy bones and bodies, and that sunlight increases Vitamin D production. However, because the risks of routine UV exposure are so high, it’s recommended that you get your Vitamin D from Vitamin D-rich foods and supplements instead. Great choices are fortified milk, cheese, yogurt, fortified cereal, salmon and tuna. And supplements can be found in every drug store these days, in both adult and children’s formulas.

6. Makeup with SPF is fine to use but not as your sole sunscreen. Cosmetic marketers have been wise to add SPF to makeup formulations. And they do provide some minimal coverage. However, they should only be used as an additional SPF on top of your real sunscreen. So be prepared to buy a lot of sunscreen (we get ours at Costco), but if you follow these tips, you and your family can still enjoy yourselves safely outside this spring and summer.

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

How have you been enjoying this February weather so far? Nice out, right? Cold and snowy days are never fun; so it helps to keep busy to get you through the winter doldrums. One big bright spot recently was the YWCA Brava Awardsthat were held on January 30th at the Greenwich Hyatt. As a co-chair, I am happy to report that this was the most successful year yet for the Brava Awards. We raised a record amount to fund the YWCA’s vital services in the community. Thank you to the many clients and friends of mine who attended the event to support this great cause.

The Weight is Over!

So don’t you just love that little bit of inches that you have to pinch that just won’t go away no matter how much you diet and exercise? Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. With wonderful names like muffin top, love handles, bra fat…the list goes on and on… and for us moms, it can often come after little bundles of joy that throw our bodies into a tailspin. Well the good news is we don’t have to live with it forever. Instead of having an either/or view on diet and exercise vs. cosmetic surgery, we now know that the best way to lose stubborn weight and keep it off, is to use all of these approaches (outlined below) in concert.

Meet the Team!

And with no further ado, I happily introduce our newest Boutique specialist, Vanessa Alfaro!
Woo hoo! Jessica, Andria and I are extremely happy to have her join our team and we can’t wait for all of our clients to meet her too. Vanessa will be assisting me in the rooms, and will also be helping out in the front office, specializing in client relations. So when you get a call from a new voice from NicholsMD, it’s probably Vanessa. She looks forward to getting to know you all.

5 Easy Tips on How to Save Your Skin This Winter!

Dry, cracked hands; sandpaper lips; flaking legs – we have all experienced the ravages that this icy and windy weather can reap on our skin. So here are some tips on how to prevent the winter weather dry-up (a few of which may be new to you).
1) Moisturize your whole body twice a day. – once right after bath on moist skin (it penetrates the skin much better) and once at bedtime. Use ointment-based moisturizers (ie. Aquaphor) or heavy cream-based moisturizers, not lotions, during winter.
2) Cracked dry hands.– throw a small tube of moisturizer in your bag and moisturize your hands every time after washing them. And for those of you who have particularly dry hands, wear cotton liners underneath wool gloves. Wool can further irritate already dry skin.

3) Eat a lot of olive oil. – it’s one of those essential oils that hydrates skin from the inside out. And feel free to lather it on your skin and hair too.
4) Wear big sunglasses. – sunglasses are not just for summer. They can also protect delicate skin around the eyes from cold wind and strong UVA rays.
5) Don’t turn the heat up too high. – I know it feels cozy but you’re much better off piling on the blankets than turning up the heat. All the moisturizer in the world can’t save you if the heat is too high sapping the moisture out of your skin while you’re sleeping.
