Monthly Newsletter - Kim Nichols MD

Happy New Year, !

I’m writing to you beachside from beautiful Nicaragua. My husband and I welcomed in 2016 dancing with some great friends and festive Nicaraguans. I hope you also rang in the new year on a great note!

Looking back on last year, some of my most cherished memories included our annual extended family summer trip (this one was to the Outer Banks), appearing on The Dr. Oz show, surprising my daughter with Taylor Swift tickets, and gaining a full (and incredible!!) NicholsMD of Greenwich staff. Here’s a photo of my great team at our holiday party.  We laughed, cheers’d, and celebrated a fantastic year built on hard work and friendship.

So what new things do you have planned for 2016? At NicholsMD, we are starting out the year with a bunch of new offerings that we hope you will love!

  1. Pain-Free Procedures! – Most of the procedures we perform are associated with little or no discomfort. However, since everyone is different, and a few procedures (like Ultherapy and Liposonix) do have a deeper impact, we aim to make you experience comfortable and anxiety-free. So we now offer nitrous oxide (aka. ‘laughing gas’), the same safe and effective sedation that you have probably had at the dentist office. So, if you have avoided procedures you’ve been interested in because of fear of discomfort, ask us about this pain-free experience.
  2. B12 Shots with MIC – The “MIC” element in the B12 vitamin boost includes methionine, which helps the liver remove fat! As part of your weight loss and exercise program, these B12-MIC shots boost metabolism and speed up your intended weight loss results. Injections can be administered twice per week. B12-MIC Vitamin boost injections are quick, safe and ONLY $50!
  3. Two ways to get rid of that Stubborn Double Chin – the new CoolSculpting CoolMini applicator to freeze away unwanted under-chin fat AND Kybella – the fat-melting injection treatment that only takes about 20 minutes to administer. If you have an unwanted double chin and want to improve your profile, come in and we’ll consult with you on which service will offer you the best results.
  4. New Monthly Product Specials – Every month we now have a special offer on some of our most effective and beloved products. This month it’s the spot-reducing skin-brightener Lytera! A must-have for any of you who may have spent too much time in the sun on your holiday vacation.
  5. New and Improved Shop Cart on our Website – You asked. We listened. As part of our amazing website overhaul, we now have a shopping page where you can refill all your favorite products that we’ve recommended for your exact skin type. This feature is designed with you in mind, so no matter which island or mountain you’re vacationing on, you’re able to refill your favorite skincare products.
  6. Continue to stay tuned for a very exciting announcement that will be coming in the next couple of months!

Enjoy the fresh start of a new year and let us help you feel beautiful, confident and ready to live your best life today and every day!

Best,

Dr. Nichols

The Non-Surgical Liquid Lift
Results-wise, surgery used to be the only go-to for turning back the hands of time; but now, ‘non-invasive’ is the way to go. A “Liquid Lift” is the ultimate, non-surgical way to turn back the clock. Using a customized approach, Dr. Kim Nichols can re-volumize areas that have become sunken or hollow, creating a lifted, natural and more youthful look.

What the Client Says About Her Non- Surgical Liquid Lift. “Wow. I’m smooth and I look as good as I feel. My insecurity of always looking tired has been resolved. My favorite improvement is in my cheeks because they don’t sag anymore. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy the recovery was as I went to work that afternoon! Dr. Nichols was comforting, too. She walked me through the whole procedure. She knew which areas would be more sensitive, and gave me cream to numb those areas. The results are incredible for being a non-surgical treatment. Thank you!!!” – 50 Year Old Female at NicholsMD of Greenwich
What the doctor says: The Liquid Lift is ideal for men and woman between the ages of ages of 30 to 65+ looking for a more rested look. Clients wanting to reverse the natural signs of aging: eye bags, dark circles, wrinkles, and loose skin, are ideal. The results are also natural and subtle. The benefits, such as minimal downtime, are unbeatable. The myth is that you’ll look fake or over-done; this is not true. This service is particularly successful to achieve a more youthful, natural, subtle, radiant, smoother, and tighter YOU! The Liquid Lift is also recommended for clients that have successfully lost a significant amount of weight. This procedure will lift the sagging skin from facial weight loss!

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

It’s here! The most wonderful time of the year!

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I spent Thanksgiving week in Disney World with my family. Our trip reminded me that family time (with the help of Mickey Mouse) is most important; and that’s why the holiday season is one of my favorite times of year.

This month has already proven quite special. I was honored to be an expert dermatologist on the Dr. Oz show on December 14th. I hope some of you caught it on air this week! Doing what I love on national television was a great experience.

On the show, I spoke about copper as a powerful antioxidant and an active ingredient in reversing the signs of aging. Since the episode, my team and I have been working with chemists to bring our very own NicholsMD Copper-Infused Moisturizer so you have access to the benefits of copper in your own skincare regimen. Click on the NicholsMD wishlist icon, then enter “Copper” in the message box, so you’re first on the list for my coming-soon copper moisturizer!

My staff and I also completely updated our KimNicholsMD.com website. You’ll love the new design and features! For example, now you’ll enjoy the convenience of being able to request appointments and time slots online. Check it out!

From all of us at NicholsMD, we wish you a happy holiday season, and look forward to seeing you in the office soon. We’re here to help you look your absolute best this holiday season!

And stay tuned for our January blog, we have big news to share in 2016!

The Embarrassment of Sweating: How To Treat

There are some beauty concerns that you don’t exactly want to blast to the world. Rest assured, everyone has them. Here’s how you can treat one of them, excessive sweating, without ever having to make it known.

An intense workout or stress can make even the coolest person sweat. However, what if you’re someone who sweats profusely sitting in an air-conditioned room? Dealing with excessive perspiration can be a huge problem, and it brings a sense of embarrassment that you can put an end to today.
Many people who experience excessive, embarrassing, seemingly uncontrollable sweating may not realize they have a medical condition called hyperhidrosis.
Whether you are someone who suffers from chronic hyperhidrosis, or someone who just has occasional bouts of excessive sweating, there are many ways to manage it.
Botox is an extremely effective treatment for excessive sweating in areas like the underarms, palms, feet, and forehead. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of hyperhidrosis and is recommended by the International Hyperhidrosis Society.

So, who can benefit from Botox for sweating?

Who: People who suffer from excessive sweating all the time or even people who only experience the excessive sweating when they are in certain stressful situations or particular climates.

How it works: The Botox injections temporary block a chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands. Mostpatients notice results 4 to 5 days after receiving treatment. Reduced sweating lasts about 3-5 months on average. And when the excessive sweating returns, you come in for your next treatment.

Where it works: Underarms, palms of hands, feet, forehead, and upper lip.

Side effects: The most common one is temporary muscle weakness, which has occurred rarely when it is injected into the hands.

Ready to stop feeling embarrassed about your sweating?

Call our office to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Nichols to discuss treating your excessive sweating with Botox. Feel confident raising your arms again, and shaking hands with colleagues.

When I think of November, I think pre-holiday fun, autumn colored leaves, and deep fireside colors. I also think about the feast on Thanksgiving, and how certain foods affect our health and beauty (read, “The Truth about Holiday Food and Your Skin” below). Last month I attended theCelebrate the Harvest for the American Diabetes Association, an evening that raised awareness to prevent and cure diabetes. With harvest as its theme, the event shared creative farm-to-table entrees, prepared by some of the area’s most talented chefs.

As a proud member of the Greenwich YWCA, I’d like to recognize those that donated to the October Domestic Violence Purple Purse Campaign. If you volunteered, donated, and/or participated in this fundraiser or the Avon39 Walk, I’d like to thank you by offering you acomplimentary skin cancer screening from now until January 2016. Building an awareness of diabetes, domestic violence, and breast cancer is one way we can all live our best lives, so thank you for participating in these health-oriented missions in our Greater New York City community.

The staff and I celebrating the season!

From all of us at the NicholsMD office, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, and look forward to seeing you in the office soon. We’re here to help you look your absolute best this holiday season!

Best,

Dr. Nichols

The Truth About Food and Your Skin

With the Thanksgiving holiday around the corner, let’s confront the way our food affects

Here’s the GOOD and DELICIOUS

BERRIES
Strawberries are a skin favorite, but blueberries and raspberries are also top choices because of their antioxidants. With more Vitamin C than oranges, berries fight the free radicals that damage cells, break down collagen, and cause fine lines and wrinkles.

LOW FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS
Vitamin A, found in dairy products, is essential for the cellular turnover of healthy skin.

SALMON
Salmon is an abundant source of the essential fatty acids (Omega-3 and 6, in particular) that compose cell membranes; keeping the skin protected and elastic.

ESSENTIAL OILS
It’s true. Extra-virgin olive oil keeps the skin hydrated and smooth, which results in the skin appearing bright.

PUMPKIN
The actual orange hue of pumpkins is from carotenoids, a wrinkle-fighting plant pigments that help neutralize free radicals in the skin. Pumpkin is also filled with powerful antioxidants, vitamins C, E, & A.

THE UGLY OF FOOD AND YOUR SKIN

SUGAR
It’s no surprise that sugar is not optimal for your body and organs. Sugar affects your skin because it damages collagen, and results in wrinkles. Since sugar breaks down your skin’s elasticity, your skin will appear to sag.

SALT
Salt leads to a puffy face. It also triggers inflammation that leads to acne and redness.

ALCOHOL
We don’t want to burst your champagne bubble, but alcohol damages the liver because it is a toxin to our body. Skin from alcohol may appear sallow, cold, with enlarged pores.

We know that the sugars, salts, and alcohols are not easy to avoid 100% of time, especially during the holiday season. This article is a reminder to eat these foods moderation while giggling and celebrating this holiday season with your family and friends.

Happy October!

I am writing to you on my way home from Washington, D.C. I attended the Tiffany Circle Summit of the American Red Cross, a 3-day annual conference of women philanthropists and thought-leaders that blew me away. I’m coming home feeling truly blessed, inspired and invigorated!

I have the best staff! Pictured here from left to right: Dr. Nichols (Dermatologist), Vanessa (Medical Assistant), Andria (Medical esthetician), and Emily (Administrative Assistant).

With my kids well into their school routines, I snuck out on a school night for a Health and Wellness event with some of our NicholsMD clients to talk skin health, beauty and NEW non-invasive services we offer. We all had a great time and it was so nice to get casual one-on-one time with some very fun ladies.

I am looking forward to this pumpkin-infused season (ask us about our new fall pumpkin facials), and I hope you are too! I look forward to hearing about your fall travels, apple-picking adventures, and what the kids are going to be for Halloween.

I look forward to seeing you in the office soon!

Best,
Dr. Nichols

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

YOU broke a record in our office…

Last month was our busiest August yet! Despite the end-of-summer vacations, last days on the beach (with sunscreen) and school shopping trips, a ton of you still came in to see us to combat some of the sun’s harsh effects. And now that September is here, it’s time to rejuvenate your skin and get it looking its absolute best again!

Andria and her kids visiting family in Louisville last week.

As I write this blog (following an awesome surf lesson I just had in Montauk!), I am brimming with excitement about the fall season. At NicholsMD, in addition to helping our clients refresh and rejuvenate, we have made some exciting changes ourselves to further enhance your experience at the Boutique.

Desmond about to take the big leap!

From our office to yours, we wish you an easy transition back to school, back to work. and back to your routines. May you always have the mindset of summer, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Hamming it up in the Hamptons!

P.S. Happy Birthday To Emily, who celebrated her Leo birthday at L’Escale here in Greenwich!

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

What’s better than summer vacations and travel? We love hearing about our clients’ trips to exotic places like the Serengeti or the Malfi Coast; and our teenage patients regarding about their summer adventures, hiking in Colorado or exploring ancient ruins in Israel; or just hearing stories about family vacation weeks in Martha’s Vineyard or fun at summer camp. It’s all so fascinating and just makes me want to pick up and go myself. 🙂

Speaking of, many of you may know that Andria’s recently returned from her 2-week trip to Europe for her sister’s wedding. She came back refreshed, looking great, and bursting with new procedure ideas straight from London’s hottest cosmetic dermatology offices and spas. Once she said was all the rage was LED light therapy, which I am happy to say we are implementing immediately. LED blue and red light 20-minute treatments are an invigorating way to improve the quality and glow of your skin and help to eliminate stubborn acne. Definitely ask about LED the next time you call or come by our office. You’re going to love it!

Well, I’m off to the Outer Banks with the extended family for a week of R&R. I know…watch out for sharks…:) But the staff will be in the office all next week so come in for aesthetic treatments with Andria, or stop by to meet our new administrative assistant, Emily (see below).

Enjoy your summer travel adventures and we hope to see you in the office soon!

Best regards,

Dr. Nichols

More on Vitamins and Healthy Skin

Taking vitamins in pill form is fine, but because the bulk of them are eliminated quickly through the body, they have little, if any, effect on your skin health. However, when used topically or injected intra-muscularly, certain vitamins can have both preventative and restorative properties to the skin.
VITAMIN A
Vitamin A (also known as retinoic acid) is the most-studied vitamin in skin care. And it’s been found to have a host of important functions and benefits.
  • Acne and acne-related dark marks
Many of us are most familiar with vitamin A as a treatment for acne. Vitamin A derivatives called retinoids (such as oral Accutane or topical Retin-A) normalize the way in which dead skin cells slough away, minimizing the clogging of pores that leads to the formation of acne. And because retinoids increase cell turnover, they also speed up the removal of acne dark marks and other discoloration on the skin.
  • Antioxidant-Prevents wrinkles and sun spotsThe sun, aging, cigarettes, pollutants, and other producers of free radicals exert a hefty toll of oxidative damage on skin cells. Vitamin A in the skin works to eliminate these free radicals, and is therefore, a powerful agent in preventing or slowing down the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Boosts collagen production-Decreases wrinkles
As an anti-aging ingredient, Vitamin A (aka retinoic acid or retinol) not only prevents skin damage but also repairs it. It does this by stimulating the production of new collagen.
VITAMIN B
Vitamin B12 and B-complex shots have been around forever; and many people, including a lot of our clients, swear by them. Although, they are not a substitute for a good diet and exercise, they can be a great supplement to boost an already healthy lifestyle. At our office we recommend starting with a loading dose of the injections once a week for the first month and then once a month (or more) for maintenance.
  • B12 vitamin

Helpful for elevating mood, energy, improving metabolism, boosting the immune system, and slowing aging.

  • B-complex vitamins
Refers to the essential water-soluble vitamins, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3),pantothenic acid (B5), pyroxidine (B6), biotin, folic acid, and the cobalamins. The B-complex vitamins are necessary for proper cell function. Benefits include promotion of healthy skin, hair and nails, good digestion, and maintenance of a healthy nervous system.
VITAMIN C
Vitamin C (also known as absorbic acid) is #2 to Vitamin A as an anti-aging powerhouse. It is an essential component of our skin structure and is vital for maintaining healthy, young skin. However, as we age, our body produces less of it naturally. Therefore, we need to replenish it exogenously.
  • Critical in collagen production-Prevents wrinkles
Vitamin C is a central molecule in collagen synthesis. As we get older, vitamin C decreases, collagen diminishes and wrinkles form. By adding vitamin C to our skin, we increase collagen formation again and decrease lines and wrinkles.
  • Antioxidant-Protects against and repairs sun spots and lines
Vitamin C protects skin cells against UV-induced free radicals. Therefore, it is very important in helping to reduce signs of photo damage such as discoloration (brown spots and melasma), lines and wrinkles. And research has shown that when used in combination with vitamin E, the combined vitamin C/E formulation is an even more powerful antioxidant than either vitamin alone.
  • The best way to replace Vitamin C is topically
Studies have shown that vitamin C is absorbed in the skin much better than when taken orally. Vitamin C products should contain 3-20% absorbic acid and should be applied in the morning under sunscreen.
VITAMIN E
As previously mentioned, Vitamin E (also known as tocopherol) is an important antioxidant in the skin. However, despite common belief, it is not a magical healer of wounds and scars.
  • Vitamin E does NOT improve scar healing and it can even make matters worse
One of the most enduring old wives’ tales is that vitamin E is a great home remedy to prevent and remove scars. However, multiple large studies have debunked that myth. Head-to-head with placebo, vitamin E has been shown to have no improved effect on the speed or appearance of scars as compared to nothing at all. And, in fact, in one large study, almost a third of the study participants got an allergic reaction to the vitamin E that caused their final scars to look even worse.
VITAMIN K
Vitamin K has gained popularity as an ingredient in eye creams and serums; mainly because it helps to reduce the worsening of under-eye dark circles.
  • Decreases the leakage of blood from under-eye blood vessels
Creams with vitamin K can help to prevent dark circles from getting worse. However, they may not improve dark circles that are already severely-hyperpigmented.

It may be a scary sight (notice our “model’s” reaction), but everyone should get under the
Skinceuticals Skin Scope LED to see what’s really going on with their skin. This diagnostic tool uses full-face UV light to illuminate sub-surface skin concerns that may be barely visible in normal light. Issues like sun damage, wrinkles, redness, congested pores, irritation and dryness can be seen in detail, up close and personal. The Skin Scope not only helps to educate patients about the state of their skin currently; it is also serves as a visible marker of progress, as they undergo skin care regimens and procedures aimed at improving the quality of their skin.

Evening Hours!

Due to popular demand, we now have evening hours 2 nights per month. Inquire within to book an appointment!
Here Comes the Sun!

With spring here and summer on it’s way, here are some tips on how to enjoy the sunny weather safely:

1. Apply physical sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Physical sunscreen is the white stuff with the ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The chemical sunscreens don’t work half as well, and can be irritating to some people. And the good news is that the physical sunscreens are much more cosmetically-appealing these days. No more of the white chalky stuff you used to only apply on your nose!

2. Apply a LOT of sunscreen and reapply it a LOT! Most of us apply way to little sunscreen to get adequate coverage from both UVA and UVB rays. For adults, a convenient guideline is to apply one teaspoon for your face and scalp, two teaspoons for your neck and torso, one teaspoon for each arm, and two teaspoons for each leg and foot. For kids, you can apply about half as much depending upon how big they are. Basically, cover them from head to toe and don’t worry about rubbing it all in. If it doesn’t all rub in before they run away from you, that’s actually a good thing.

3. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go into the sun and reapply every 2 hours. You’ve heard this one before, but it’s worth repeating. Sunscreen needs at least 15-30 minutes to absorb into your skin to be protective, and becomes inert after about 2 hours. And although “water-resistant” sunscreen is helpful, it’s still best to reapply after swimming (even if it hasn’t been 2 hours yet).

4. Avoid the height of the sun hours between 10am and 2pm. This is pretty easy for us because we have little kids who need lunch and naps during these times anyway. However, it’s a good policy for everyone. Try to use most of those intensely strong UV hours to take a break, go get some lunch and switch your activities to shady areas.

5. Get your Vitamin D from your diet not the sun. We all know that Vitamin D is essential to maintain healthy bones and bodies, and that sunlight increases Vitamin D production. However, because the risks of routine UV exposure are so high, it’s recommended that you get your Vitamin D from Vitamin D-rich foods and supplements instead. Great choices are fortified milk, cheese, yogurt, fortified cereal, salmon and tuna. And supplements can be found in every drug store these days, in both adult and children’s formulas.

6. Makeup with SPF is fine to use but not as your sole sunscreen. Cosmetic marketers have been wise to add SPF to makeup formulations. And they do provide some minimal coverage. However, they should only be used as an additional SPF on top of your real sunscreen. So be prepared to buy a lot of sunscreen (we get ours at Costco), but if you follow these tips, you and your family can still enjoy yourselves safely outside this spring and summer.

With wonderful names like muffin top, love handles, bra fat…the list goes on and on… and for us moms, it can often come after little bundles of joy that throw our bodies into a tailspin. Well the good news is we don’t have to live with it forever. Instead of having an either/or view on diet and exercise vs. cosmetic surgery, we now know that the best way to lose stubborn weight and keep it off, is to use all of these approaches (outlined below) in concert.

Meet the Team!

And with no further ado, I happily introduce our newest Boutique specialist, Vanessa Alfaro!
Woo hoo! Jessica, Andria and I are extremely happy to have her join our team and we can’t wait for all of our clients to meet her too. Vanessa will be assisting me in the rooms, and will also be helping out in the front office, specializing in client relations. So when you get a call from a new voice from NicholsMD, it’s probably Vanessa. She looks forward to getting to know you all.
