Collagen: Why Do We Need It?

What is collagen?
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in our body that aids in skin’s elasticity, radiance, and fullness.

Why is collagen so important?
Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein, and acts as a structure for not only the skin but also bones, tendons, ligaments, hair, and nails. As collagen is lost, this foundation starts to weaken and cell turnover slows, causing an increase in skin’s wrinkles, dryness, laxity and thinness.

What causes loss of collagen?
Loss of collagen happens as we age, but other factors that contribute to collagen loss include: sun-damage, pollution, tobacco usage and excessive smoking, poor diet and sugar consumption.

What can be done to restore and increase collagen?
There are many ways to boost collagen, but my most recommended ways are:

  • Taking collagen supplements and having a diet rich omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin A.
  • Incorporating the proper skincare regimen, like my go-to Trifecta. This includes an  antioxidant, a retinol, and always protecting your skin with a daily SPF.
  • Coming into the office for routine, collagen-building treatments such as Ultherapy, The Greenwich Secret, and Microneedling.
