A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

We moved!!

The last few weeks have been busy! NicholsMD has finally moved to our bigger and brighter space at 50 Old Field Point Road, Third Floor in Greenwich. We’re so excited for you to experience “NicholsMD 2.0” and provide you with the latest, most advanced skincare solutions to help you look and feel your absolute best (more details below!).
To celebrate the move, my staff and I had a Girls-Night-Out at Pinot’s Palette. While we’re not the next Picassos, it was a fun evening after all the hard work on the move. Here’s a snapshot!

My husband and I have had our own night-outs recently, attending concerts like Beyonce, Sting and Paul Simon! And we had a great time this past Sunday as sponsors of a Greenwich Polo event. What a fun, family outing on a gorgeous day!

My middle one, Peyton, not in the photo because my poor guy was under-the-weather that day!

We’re looking forward to seeing you in the new space, so you can feel beautiful, confident and ready to live your best life today and every day!
Best,
Dr. Nichols

Ask the Aesthetician
Question: Can I use the same products in the summer that I use in the winter months?

Answer: Certain products can be used year-round; but, for the most part, you want to change your skin care routine seasonally.

Our skin will overproduce oil in the heat of summer to help keep it moisturized. In the summer months you should cleanse, exfoliate, treat and prevent sun damage with lighter-weight products. Here are some of my favorite summertime products:

SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser – This cleanser removes excess impurities and oil without drying the skin. Gentle enough to be used several times a day, this non-irritating cleanser conditions, soothes, and calms.

IntraCeuticals Enzyme Exfoliant -This light exfoliator amplifies skin radiance and provides a perfect base for the application of makeup. It contains a combination of carnauba, beeswax and bamboo beads which provide unparalleled exfoliation to reveal a polished and glowing complexion.

SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum – This all-in-one skin rejuvenating treatment improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and texture. No wonder it’s Hollywood’s secret to beautiful skin!

ColoreScience Sunforgettable Loose Mineral SunscreenThis broad-spectrum sunscreen makes protecting your skin easy, 365 days a year. Perfectly portable and easy to reapply, it offers powerful SPF 50 UVA/UVB protection with sheer, natural-looking coverage. And you can put it right on top of your makeup so you can keep up with your promise to Dr. Nichols to re-apply your sunscreen every two hours!:)

Meet Alyson!

Meet Alyson!

Alyson joined our NicholsMD staff earlier this month as Client Coordinator. She’ll be the first person you meet when you enter our new, Boutique location. She’s joining us after graduating from Pennsylvania State University this past spring. She has a keen interest in cosmetic dermatology, so she’ll be starting nursing school and working with NicholsMD in the fall to pursue her passion. We’re so excited to have her join our staff, and for you to meet her!

Keep this in mind the next time you jump in the water!
While a nice dip in the pool is great on a hot day, nothing beats jumping into the crashing ocean waves. But if you notice an itchy rash start to develop after you get out of the water, you may have been the victim of one of the many tiny critters that live in sea. Here are two of the most common seaborne skin problems to watch out for:

Seabather’s Eruption is an extremely itchy rash caused by Cnidarian jellyfish larvae, often called “sea lice.” It begins a few hours after bathing in the ocean, usually in places along the Atlantic coast. It occurs when these invisible larvae become entrapped under people’s swimsuits, and then release a toxin that leads to the subsequent rash. Therefore, most of the bumps and hives of the rash will be found on the areas of the body that were covered by the swimsuit – i.e. the buttocks, waist and breasts. The eruption can persist for up to 2 weeks. And according to a recent ABC News report, a wide outbreak of these sea lice are expected along the Gulf of Mexico this summer. So if you are in these endemic areas, it’s best to shower with cold water immediately after getting out of the ocean; this will hopefully get off any possible larvae before an eruption starts.

Swimmer’s Itch differs from Seabather’s Eruption in that it is found on exposed areas of the body not covered by swimsuits (most often on the legs and chest); and it can occur both in saltwater and freshwater. It is caused a microscopic organism called a cercarieae that leaves its snail host and burrows into the skin of unsuspecting swimmers. After coming out of the water, the bather begins to itch and the rash develops. The incredibly itchy rash comes and goes for several days and then spontaneously resolves. It can be prevented by thoroughly washing, towel-drying, and applying alcohol to exposed body parts after swimming in an endemic area.

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

Bonjourno!

That’s about the extent of the Italian I picked up on my recent trip to Italy. My husband, friends and I took a week in Tuscany, Florence and Rome. The wine tours, the food, the shopping… it was a wonderful trip that I won’t forget!

My husband and I in the postcard poppy fields of Tuscany.

Back at the office, my team and I had a great time last Sunday at a New York City Football Club game (that’s NYC’s professional soccer team). My husband’s firm, Cabanillas and Associates, hosted my staff and his employees at one of their sponsored suites. It was a beautiful sunny day so the staff and I used our ColoreScience Unforgettable SPF 30 Mineral Brush to reapply our sunscreen without messing up our makeup. It’s a must for the summer season, so you should definitely check it out on our shop page! (And P.S It’s also our Product of the Month!)

Our soon-to-be NicholsMD location is finishing up construction! This means, we’re just a few weeks away from move-in day! I’m so excited for you to see the bigger and brighter Boutique.

I’m looking forward to having you in the boutique to help you feel beautiful, confident and ready to live your best life today and every day!

Best,
Dr. Nichols

Dr. Nichols Reports on the Zika Virus

Dr. Nichols appeared on News12 Connecticut recently and discussed the use of insect repellant in light of the recent epidermic of the Zika virus. The bottom line: DEET is the most effective ingredient in insect repellants and are a must-use this summer to prevent Zika and other mosquito-born illnesses.

Dr. Nichols Shares Safe Ways to Apply Bug Repellent

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics has certified that DEET in insect repellant is safe to use in children 6-months old and older.
  • Do not spray aerosol or pump products in enclosed areas.
  • Do not spray aerosol or pump products directly to your face. Spray your hands and then rub them carefully over the face, avoiding eyes and mouth.
  • Wash off repellant after returning indoors.
  • Do not apply DEET near cuts or open wounds.
  • You can apply DEET and sunscreen together. However, it is recommended that you apply the sunscreen first.

Ask the Aesthetician
Question: “What is a Microneedling Treatment? Does it hurt? What can I expect?”

Answer: PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. The platelets in our blood are cells designed to heal injuries and are filled with our own natural growth factors. This makes them exponentially more effective than synthetic growth factors in rejuvenating our skin and hair follicles!

Here’s how the procedure goes: a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. The patient’s blood is drawn, spun, and the PRP is separated and prepared for use. The numbing cream is removed. The area is then treated with passes of micro-needling with PRP. Because of the numbing cream, the procedure just feels like a vibrating sensation.

After the procedure, the patient will experience some redness that subsides in 3 to 5 days. Treatments are spaced 3-4 weeks apart with 3 or 6 treatments needed, depending upon what is being treated. Visible changes will develop over the course of several weeks.

A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

I hope you’re having a productive spring start to the warmer season! Construction is in full swing at the soon-to-be NicholsMD location.  I’m so excited for you to see the bigger and brighter space. One of the perks of the new office will be regular Saturday appointments. For now, our current office is scheduling occasional Saturday appointments and evening hours. Click here to schedule!

Over the past two weekends, the NicholsMD team has been honored to participate and sponsor two important fundraising events to support some great causes: the Go the Distance Walk and Family Fun Day, the largest annual fundraiser for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure for breast cancer. Although it rained on both occasions, it couldn’t dampen our enthusiasm!

And it’s always fun seeing many of you at various spring evening events in our community.

Inside our office, we’ve added some new exciting procedures to our list of services such as PRP and microneedling. PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is all-the-buzz right now as an incredibly effective treatment for not only skin aging rejuvenation, but also acne scarring, hair loss, and stretch marks! And microneedling treatments (with hyaluronic acid, growth factors, or PRP) are a great way to improve skin tone and texture with no downtime.

I hope you and your families are enjoying the warmer weather. I’m looking forward to having you in our boutique to help you feel beautiful, confident and ready to live your best life today and every day!

Best,
Dr. Nichols

And Happy Cinco de Mayo from my family to yours!

Ask the Aesthetician
This month we are proud to debut a new addition to our monthly newsletter, called Ask the Aesthetician. Andria Brennan, our medical aesthetician extraordinaire, will be answering one or two frequently asked questions about aesthetic procedures, skin care products, makeup, etc. And please feel free to send her an email if you have a question you would like answered in upcoming newsletters.

Question: If I have a tan, is it ok to get an oxygen facial?

Answer: Yes, It’s completely safe.  In fact, it’s quite beneficial to have an oxygen treatment after being in the sun! The oxygen treatment will help the skin quickly heal from the drying and damaging effects of the sun. And the Vitamin C infusion during the oxygen facial acts not only as a powerful antioxidant, but it also leaves your skin plump and hydrated.

May: Skin Cancer Awareness Month

By Andria Brennan

I spent most of my life in the sun. From sunny Southern California to the white sand beaches of Hawaii, I always wanted to have the perfect bronzed tan. So of course, sunscreen was not on my radar. Now I’m paying the price! From the oh-so-not-cute freckles all over my face, chest, arms, legs, and back (you get the picture), to the fine lines that are creeping up on my 30-something face, I regret my many hours of lying on the beach and soaking up the sun.

Today, you will not see me without sunscreen on! Let it be in our soggy start to May or the extreme heat of summer, sunscreen is always on and nearby.  Because the powerful UV rays that feel oh-so-good, cause more than just freckles and tan lines. They age us prematurely; burst our small blood vessels leaving us red in the face all the time; cause scaly patches, discoloration and most importantly…Cancer!

For the best ways to prevent all of this damage, here are a few tips from suncancer.org.

  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB), physical (i.e. with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See your dermatologist every year for a professional skin exam.

Annual Full Body Skin Exams!

In honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, NicholsMD is offering one friend or family member a complimentary full body skin exam at your next appointment with us (valued at $175)We kindly ask that you call or email our office in advance if you plan to take advantage of this Friends and Family May offer!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of skin color, gender or age. In fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. These facts may be alarming, but because skin cancer is mainly a behavioral disease, it is highly preventable.

*Expires May 31, 2016 *One Family/Friend Complimentary Screening Per Client  *NicholsMD is offering one friend or family member a complimentary full body skin exam at your next appointment with us. Cannot be redeemed on past appointments or cancelled appointments. Spring is here, ! And although we can’t complain after having such a mild winter, I’m looking forward to more sunny days and outdoor fun.

Top-of-the-mountain family selfie on last ski trip of the season.

I actually just got back from a warm, girls’ getaway in Palms Springs. It was nice to take a break from the designing and construction efforts that we’ve been putting into the new NicholsMD Boutique (coming Summer 2016!), and spend the weekend catching up with great friends.
Before I left for my trip, I was thrilled to announce to the team that I had hired a new Office Operations Manager, our own Emily Palmer! Many of you already know our Emily well, and realize what capable and caring hands we are in. I couldn’t be more excited about Emily leading NicholsMD into the future and hope you will all give her a big congratulations when you see her next.
The NicholsMD staff has been busy, too! Last week, we had a staff dinner where we celebrated the birthdays of Andria and Vanessa. And on Saturday, we were proud to have a table at the YWCA Persimmon Ball, in support of the YWCA’s essential work in the greater Greenwich community.
And it was so great to see so many of you – fellow board members, clients, and friends – looking fabulous and festive at the American Red Cross Black and White Ball on April 2.
This weekend, NicholsMD will also be hosting a table at the Fairfield County Women’s Expo in Stamford! We’ll be offering mini-oxygen treatments to those who come by our booth, and raffling off Coolsculpting, an Ultherapy brow lift treatment, and New Beauty Test Tubes. We hope to see you there with this free admission pass!
With a bigger and brighter NicholsMD office space under construction, I’m looking forward to having you in our current 469 W. Putnam Avenue, Suite 201 boutique to help you feel beautiful, confident and ready to live your best life today and every day!
Best,
Dr. Nichols

Reintroducing Emily

Our New Office Operations Manager!

I am beyond excited!

Like the rest of the NicholsMD team, I take a tremendous amount of pride in the comfort and care in each and every one of our client’s experience. Although my role has changed, my commitment is still the same: Every client deserves to feel beautiful and confident every day of their life. Your exclusive, boutique experience remains my top priority.

As you may know, I am finishing my M.A degree at Columbia University, so I will continue to be virtual a few days per week. Nonetheless, I’m proud to be your primary point of contact for all client-related questions, request for community donations, and I am always available for your feedback. Thus, if I can be of your assistance, I invite you to email me at emily@kimnicholsmd.com.

Spring ushers in a renewed commitment to skincare, diet, and exercise after a long winter’s hibernation.  We offer innovative procedures that will boost your spring renewal and get you ready for a gorgeous summer!

1. Laser hair removal is an especially popular treatment during the spring for men and women.  Rid yourself of unwanted hair on backs, legs, arms, chins, upper lips and other areas, so you’re hair-free just in time for summer. Laser hair removal uses beams of light to prevent hair growth. It’s an effective solution to the inconvenience of having to shave, wax and tweeze regularly. Watch our 4-second video demonstrating laser hair removal on the leg!

2. PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. The platelets in our blood contain growth factors that are exponentially more effective than synthetic growth factors in rejuvenating our skin!  Using our own PRP on our skin triggers a natural repair process that results in thicker, softer skin, diminished lines and wrinkles, and improved skin tone. And PRP can even help in hair loss! And PRP treatments can be done all year-long because they are not affected by sun exposure. So come in to find out what all the buzz is about with PRP treatments! Click here to watch our PRP Micro-Needling video!

3. B12 Vitamin Injections help boost metabolism and energy, supporting your exercise and weight loss goals as you work to get into summer shape.
